GOP Senator Admits Fear of Trump 2.0: ‘We Are All Afraid’
In a recent address to nonprofit and tribal leaders in Anchorage, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) candidly expressed her concerns about the current political climate under Donald Trump’s administration. She stated, “We are all afraid,” highlighting a pervasive fear of retaliation that she herself feels, which is unprecedented in her over two decades in the Senate.
Murkowski has been a vocal critic of the Trump administration’s aggressive policies, particularly those involving the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. She condemned the mass firings of federal employees and the indiscriminate freezing of federal funding, actions that have left thousands unemployed and disrupted essential services.
โWe are all afraid,โ Murkowski said, taking a long pause. โItโs quite a statement. But we are in a time and a place where I certainly have not been here before. And Iโll tell ya, Iโm oftentimes very anxious myself about using my voice, because retaliation is real. And thatโs not right.โ
The senator emphasized the human impact of these policies, recounting stories of constituents who lost their jobs without notice and are now afraid to speak out due to fear of retaliation. She described the current situation as one of the most challenging she has faced in her political career.

โIt is head spinning,โ Murkowski said. โIt seems that just when youโve made a little bit of progress on one issue that had caused so much anxiety, thereโs another one.โ
Despite facing political pressure and threats of being challenged within her party, Murkowski remains committed to upholding her integrity and voicing opposition to policies she sees as harmful. She has previously rebuked Trump for undermining the U.S.’s alliance system and aligning with authoritarian regimes.
โIt is as hard as anything I have been engaged in, in the 20-plus years Iโve been in the Senate,โ Murkowski said.
Murkowski’s stance underscores a significant division within the Republican Party as they navigate the implementation of President Trump’s agenda. Her willingness to speak out against her party’s leadership highlights the importance of maintaining democratic institutions and protecting the rights of federal employees.
As the nation grapples with complex political and social issues, Murkowski’s call for courage and integrity serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up for democratic principles, even in the face of adversity.
