Petty Trump Refuses to Give Biden Air Force One Ride to Pope’s Funeral
In a display of presidential pettiness that could make a high school mean girl blush, Donald Trump refused to offer former President Joe Biden a ride on Air Force One to Pope Francis’ funeral in Italy. This breaks with the precedent set in 2005 when then-President George W. Bush traveled with former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton to Pope John Paul II’s funeral.
When informed that Biden would also be attending the ceremony, Trump dismissed the idea of meeting him, remarking it was “not high on my list.” During the service, Trump and First Lady Melania visibly ignored Biden and his wife, Jill, despite sitting nearby.

Despite winning a second term, Trump continues to focus heavily on criticizing Biden, mentioning him over 300 times in the initial 50 days of his new term and accusing him of causing various crises.

Meanwhile, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the trip and expressed optimism about a nearing agreement in Ukraine, encouraging high-level meetings to finalize it.

In a further display of decorum, Trump arrived at the funeral wearing a blue suit amidst a sea of black attire, standing out as the only attendee not adhering to the traditional mourning dress code.

During the funeral, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re delivered a homily that echoed Pope Francis’ teachings, stating, “Build bridges, not walls,” a phrase the late Pope often used. This was seen as a subtle rebuke of Trump’s border wall policy.
Adding to the awkwardness, French President Emmanuel Macron greeted Ukrainian President Zelenskyy warmly but appeared to snub Trump, leading to a brief moment of tension.
Despite the solemn occasion, Trump managed to insert his signature style of diplomacy, turning a funeral into a stage for political theater.
