Trump Makes Chilling ‘Joke’ About Staying in Office for a Third Term
In the latest episode of “The Constitution? Never Heard of It,” Donald Trump has once again floated the idea of a third term in office. Because, of course, when you’re already the star of your own reality show, why not aim for a trilogy?
Trump made the comments to The Atlantic in a new interview published Monday, laughing about the idea. Trump teased the possibility of running in 2028, despite that pesky 22nd Amendment, which clearly states that no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice. But hey, what’s a little constitutional clause when you’ve got a MAGA hat and a dream?
“That would be a big shattering, wouldn’t it?” Trump mused, likely referring to both the Constitution and our collective patience. “Well, maybe I’m just trying to shatter.” Ah, the classic Trumpian strategy: say something outrageous, claim it’s a joke, and then watch as supporters start printing “Trump 2028” bumper stickers.
Speaking of merchandise, the Trump Organization has already started selling “Trump 2028” hats for a mere $50. Because nothing says “respect for democratic norms” like monetizing your hypothetical illegal third term.

But wait, there’s more! Trump has also hinted at a cunning plan to circumvent term limits by running as Vice President to a loyal ally, such as current Vice President JD Vance. The idea being that once elected, the President would step down, allowing Trump to reclaim the throne. It’s like a political version of musical chairs, but with more indictments.
Of course, this master plan would require a constitutional amendment, which involves a two-thirds majority in both houses of Congress and ratification by three-fourths of the states. Given that Trump has never secured a majority of the popular vote, this seems about as likely as him reading the Constitution cover to cover.
Legal experts have been quick to point out the absurdity of these suggestions. The 22nd Amendment was ratified in 1951 to prevent exactly this kind of power grab. But in Trump’s world, laws are more like guidelines, and the Constitution is just a pesky obstacle to be overcome with a well-placed tweet.
So, while Trump continues to flirt with the idea of a third term, perhaps it’s time for the rest of us to remember that democracy isn’t a reality show, and the presidency isn’t a prize to be won repeatedly. Unless, of course, you’re Donald Trump, in which case every day is an audition for the next season of “America’s Next Top Autocrat.”
