White House Slammed for Attempting to ‘Hide’ Trump’s ‘Disrespectful’ Act at Pope’s Funeral
In a display of decorum that could only be described as “uniquely Trumpian,” Donald Trump attended Pope Francis’s funeral in Rome, managing to turn a solemn occasion into yet another episode of his ongoing reality show. While the Vatican’s dress code for the event was clear—dark suits and black ties for men—Trump opted for a navy blue suit and matching tie, standing out like a sore thumb among the sea of black-clad dignitaries.
Social media users were quick to criticize Trump’s attire, with one commenter noting, “He stood out like a sore thumb.” Another remarked, “Of course Trump is the only jack*** wearing a blue suit and blue tie to a funeral… such an embarrassment.” The consensus was clear: Trump’s choice of outfit was seen as a blatant disregard for the occasion’s solemnity.
Melania Trump, on the other hand, adhered to the traditional mourning attire, wearing a black dress, gloves, and a veil. Her compliance with the dress code only served to highlight her husband’s sartorial misstep.
The White House has been accused of intentionally using a black and white filter on images of Trump and Melania at the Pope’s funeral to “hide” Trump’s disrespectful decision to wear a blue suit.

Following the service, the White House shared two images of Trump, including one of him and Melania, at the funeral. Both images were in black and white.
Critics were quick to accuse the White House of attempting to “hide” the fact that Trump had worn a blue suit. One commented: “Just because you make the photo black and white, doesn’t mean you actually wore a respectful black suit!”
“Black and white to hide his ridiculous blue suit! There is NOTHING these guys won’t LIE about,” another wrote. A third noted: “Bright blue suits look more respectful in B&W don’t they….”
Some demanded they post the original images. “Show it in color show us that disrespectful blue suit and him falling asleep,” one wrote. Another added: “lol now show us the picture where your wearing blue and everyone’s wearing black like they’re supposed to be.”
The president and first lady were also accused of using the funeral as a photo opportunity. One person questioned: “Was it a funeral or a photoshoot?”
“Only this corrupt administration would use the Pope’s funeral as a Photo Op,” another commented under a black and white photo of Melania at the funeral shared by the White House. A third agreed, writing: “Self-centred. A funeral is not a photoshoot!”
Adding to the controversy, Trump’s statement on Truth Social about attending the funeral was criticized for its tone. He wrote, “Melania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome. We look forward to being there.” Critics argued that the phrase “look forward to being there” was more suited to a vacation announcement than a funeral, further demonstrating Trump’s inability to grasp the gravity of the occasion.
During the funeral, Trump was seen whispering to Melania, who reportedly responded with a side-eye glance, according to lip readers. This interaction, coupled with Trump’s attire and statement, painted a picture of a man more concerned with his own image than paying respects to a global religious leader.
In contrast, other world leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, adhered to the dress code and conducted themselves with the expected decorum. Zelensky even received a round of applause from the crowd as he exited the basilica.
As expected, Trump’s appearance at Pope Francis’s funeral was marked by a series of missteps that drew criticism from observers worldwide. From his choice of attire to his tone-deaf statement and behavior during the service, Trump once again demonstrated his penchant for turning solemn occasions into personal spectacles.
