Don Lemon Faces Backlash After Saying Trump Supporters are Like Drug Addicts Who ‘Hit Rock Bottom’
Thursday night CNN host Don Lemon stepped in a hornet’s nest after he compared Trump supporters to drug addicts who have “hit rock bottom,” saying he’s had to cut friends out of his life because of this, The Daily Mail reports.
“I had to get rid of a lot of people in my life because sometimes you’ve just got to let them go,” Lemon told his colleague Chris Cuomo Thursday at the beginning of CNN Tonight.
“I think they have to hit rock bottom like an addict, right?” he said.
But it’s not just that. They have to live in the now and be present for that, he added.
“And they have to want to get help, they have to want to know the truth, they have to want to live in reality, they have to want to be responsible not only for other people’s lives but for their own,” he said.

Lemon, who is 54, talked about growing up and living in red states, where he made friends who eventually became Trump supporters, and it’s been difficult for him to reckon with this.
“You know what the sad thing is? And I’ll be honest with you … I’ve had many people who I love in my life — and yeah I come from a red state (Louisiana), I’ve lived in several red states, there are a lot of friends who I’ve had to really get rid of because they are so nonsensical when it comes to this issue,” he added. “They have every single talking point that they hear on state TV and that they hear from this president, they repeated and they’re blinded by it.”
This really does seem like a mantra for some Trump supporters. They stick by whatever Trump says, without questioning anything. It’s a frustrating situation that Lemon is tired of.
CNN’s @donlemon: "I have many people who I love in my life … There are a lot of friends I had to really get rid of because they are so non-sensical when it comes to [Trump]. If they’re willing to come back and willing to live in reality, then I will welcome them with open arms” pic.twitter.com/eLsVX1qAdD

“I had to get rid of them because they’re too far gone.”
“I try and I try and I try, they say something really stupid and then I’ll show them the science and I’ll give them the information, and they still repeat those same talking points,” he noted. “It’s so sad. And I don’t know if after this I’ll be able to go back and be friends with those people because at a certain point, you just say they’re too far gone and I’ve got to let them go.”
I’m not sure if it would be worth it to resume a friendship with a Trump supporter. It’s not something I’d do but even so Lemon is wondering about this.
“…If they’re willing to come back, they’re willing to live in reality, then I would welcome them with open arms,” Lemon said. “But I can’t do it anymore.”
Cue the Trump-supporting fools on Twitter, who are in a snit over Lemon’s commentary. After reading some of the tweets below I have to wonder if these people are worth the trouble. I don’t believe so.
Does people really still watch CNN haven't they been busted over and over for lying it's a scripted nonfiction TV show.

Someone has dirt on Don for him to make these non-sensical comments.

Mr Lemon, when you see that the world is against you, the problem is not the world, it's you 🤷🏼♀️

These people have no idea what kind of “resistance” they are in for should Trump lose. After four years of defending, the shoe will be on the other foot. I almost can’t wait.

This is why @donlemon is so fake! He gets rid of “Friends” because they don’t agree with him??? With friends like that, who needs enemies!
— Ryan (@ryanschade1) October 30, 2020
Now is that childish or what?
— Suzzanne (@Suzzanne3475) October 30, 2020
Good for the people he’s getting rid of. Who absolutely really needs him anyway?
— Renae (@snowball1991) October 30, 2020
So, he thinks his friendship is that valuable that he can buy people into changing their minds. Huh.
