Danger Trump-Cult: “President Pence” PAC Formed

Even a fraction of Republicans turning away from Trump matters

The “President Pence PAC” now exists.

I get it. I do.

It ain’t going to make a huge difference. It certainly is won’t switch many (any?) Republican senators’ votes.

Ten-four, I understand.

On the other hand, it is important to remind Republicans that impeachment is not about “reversing” the 2016 election. Impeachment doesn’t result in Hillary Clinton assuming office. (Yes, they surely know that, but it is good to blow that line up). Republicans who hear may think: “That’s true, it isn’t a reversal, so that can’t be the motivation.”

Additionally, Trump can’t afford to have any Republicans hesitate in their commitment to him. We are talking about a man who lost the popular vote by 3 million, and won the electoral college by threading a needle by a mere 70,000 vote advantage over three states. Each percentage point he loses devastates him. Movements like this, small as they may be, might get voters questioning if Trump is worth supporting through to 2020.

I also understand that Pence might actually be worse than Trump in some respects. Pence might actually have enough competence to get something done. But Pence is unlikely to be slavishly beholden to Russia and Saudi Arabia. Americans might grab some aspects of American foreign policy again. Plus, it would be a signal to the world that Americans can maybe be somewhat trusted again.

Pence is also less likely to cheat his ass through an election. Moreover, Pence is likely to actually peacefully step down when he’s defeated in 2020. Trump will do everything possible to retain power, contesting the election in any close state, possibly alleging “interference,” possibly alleging illegal votes, possibly invoking some state of emergency.

Pence also lacks the cult following that Trump has created. Republicans are less likely to enthusiastically get out and vote to ensure their “god-like” figure remains president.

So, yes, I get it.

It doesn’t mean much.

But that doesn’t mean it is entirely meaningless.
