Trump Shamelessly Spraying Misinformation: Coronavirus a ‘Hoax’ But Cancels Meeting In Vegas

OMG.

This is getting serious, and seriously dangerous:

So he’s willing to put lives in danger to tell us lies at rallies about the Coronavirus being a hoax. But when it comes to his life, he is unwilling to be the brave American front, instead he’ll be hiding in Washington from “Asian” leaders.

From the Las Vegas Review Journal:

The U.S. is postponing the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations planned summit in Las Vegas amid fears of the coronavirus.

“As the international community works together to defeat the novel coronavirus, the United States, in consultation with ASEAN partners, has made the difficult decision to postpone the ASEAN leaders meeting previously scheduled for mid-March. The United States values our relationships with the nations of this critical region, and looks forward to future meetings,” said a senior administration official.

We can be sure that it is canceled in part because these are leaders from Asia. But at the rate this virus spreads, I am not sure that the Asian leaders wouldn’t have canceled coming to this country.

It is extremely difficult to get acurate information, not the least bit because this administration wants it that way. From Paul Krugman, Nobel-winning economist NYT columnist:

From the day Donald Trump was elected, some of us worried how his administration would deal with a crisis not of its own making. Remarkably, we’ve gone three years without finding out: Until now, every serious problem facing the Trump administration, from trade wars to confrontation with Iran, has been self-created. But the coronavirus is looking as if it might be the test we’ve been fearing.

And the results aren’t looking good.

Indeed, Trump just completed another press conference in the briefing room, stating that it is likely that the United States will see “more cases” (no shit?), but that healthy people will get through it. It certainly is true that most healthy people will get through it. But that doesn’t mean all will, and it doesn’t mean that this isn’t going to be a bear  for the country in terms of work stoppages, and school absences.

Back to Paul Krugman:

Maybe Trump — and America — will be lucky, and this won’t be as bad as it might be. But anyone feeling confident right now isn’t paying attention.

I am not feeling lucky at all right now. It feels like literally anything can happen at this point.

The one thing that won’t happen is that Trump will not hold a press conference where he says that things look like they will be tough for a while, calls on everyone to put politics aside and unite, and then steps aside and lets the doctors speak. That, we know, is precisely the problem.
