Listen to Sailors Shout Profanities at Acting Navy Sec. After He Calls Their Captain ‘Stupid and Naive’
As Andrea and Nicole reported this morning, Defense Secretary Mike Esper sent “Acting” Navy Secretary Thomas Modly out to Guam to speak to the men and women of the carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt about why he fired their Captain, Captain Brett Crozier.
As you are aware, Captain Crozier sent a letter begging for help to keep his crew of increasingly coronavirus-positive sailors, safe. That letter leaked (perhaps it was intended to leak, to get the attention needed), and resulted in Crozier’s firing.
Modly assembled a crew still mourning the loss of its leader, its captain, and promptly called Captain Crozier “stupid” and “naive,” responses can be heard in the background, “What the fuck?” as well as a lot of angry yelling.
In other words, whatever Modly set out to do in going out to address the sailors and aviators unless it was to enrage the crew, he failed – and deserves to be fired far more so than Captain Crozier, who – if he erred- did so in attempting to protect his crew.

The response on Twitter was brutal:
Acting Navy secretary blasts ousted aircraft carrier captain as 'stupid' in address to ship's crew – CNNPolitics. (ACTING SEC NAVY MUST RESIGN. This is the worst judgment by a defense official possible. Terrible signal to sailors.) https://t.co/2hrEtcZxAW

And not just from McCaffrey:
Regardless of what you think of Captain Crozier’s actions, Acting Secretary Modly’s belittling him to the men Crozier tried to save is a tactical error an order of magnitude greater than any mistake of Crozier’s. Modly must go. #FireModly #modly #CoronavirusUSA https://t.co/XLzncKzu7G

Yes, Modly must now resign as his remarks served no purpose whatsoever. Again, Crozier’s mistake – if one must call it that – was made in an attempt to protect the lives of his sailors, Modly’s was to deliver a message from Trump, one of rage, and an insult to the sailors.
Acting Sec Navy utterly stupid decision to try to demean Capt Crozier to the crew. Did he ask the senior enlisted sailor aboard the Roosevelt for his advice? Modly too bone headed to be in public life.

I think McCaffrey is about as angry as I have ever heard him. One doesn’t rise to that level of the military without caring for the people serving under you. We certainly saw where the loyalties laid when Captain Crozier left the carrier, and we’re hearing that same group’s response today.
Perhaps it is best to end this with the roar that Crozier heard. Oh, and while you watch this man who tried to protect his crew, know that he is taking this abuse while quarantining himself for coronavirus.
Remarkable images of sailors cheering Captain Crozier, the commander of the aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt, who was relieved of his command for raising the alarm about the spread of #COVID19. The crew chants “Captain Crozier” as he leaves the ship.pic.twitter.com/yh7A4TO0Qy

Brings tears to my eyes, still. One man, alone – he did his best, right or wrong.
