Trump Wanted Melania to Help Design the Space Force Uniforms Because She Has ‘Impeccable Fashion Sense’

This is one of those headlines that at first you roll your eyes, and then upon reading it three more times and remembering who’s president you think to yourself, “well of course he asked.”

According to Military.com,

First Lady Melania Trump could have had a hand in designing the U.S. Space Force‘s future uniform.

That’s according to a new in-depth report from Time Magazine on the fledgling military force. With Melania Trump’s years of attending elite fashion shows and working as a former model, President Donald Trump reportedly thought the design job would be a natural fit for her, Time reported.

Yes, of course, because there is so much crossover appeal between military uniforms – especially ones possibly worn in space, and leather skirts with six-inch stilettos that cost more than a car. We might also point out that NASA and the military do a lot of things awfully well already and they both have been pretty adept at designing uniforms which from the beginning lookied pretty badass according to pretty well everyone.

After studying four designs, Trump reportedly “pulled out a black Sharpie marker, drew an arrow pointed at the seal and scratched out his signature above it.” Roughly a week later, Trump tweeted the picture of that seal; the seal uses the delta symbol from the service’s flag and logo, which was unveiled this week. Before the meeting was over, Trump suggested the First Lady “should help design Space Force uniforms because of her impeccable fashion sense,” Time reported. The incident eventually became a plotline in the Steve Carell Netflix comedy “Space Force.”

I am not at all sure how a fashion model’s experience with “impeccable fashion sense” had any crossover utility in designing military uniforms that actually do serve a few more functions than just looking, well, badass. But apparently those things don’t matter to Trump, and he is the one that makes these decisions.

God help us all. Because we’ll likely never know if Trump ever believed Melania’s “experience” might have been needed in other aspects of government.

“She spends a lot on credit cards, so the Treasury Secretary should really run some ideas by …”
