Trump Says He Wants to Withhold Money From USPS So Democrats ‘Can’t Have Universal Mail-In Voting’
Trump has always been over the top, always saying the quiet part out loud, so it is dangerous to say that he has taken the proclivity to a new level. And yet it can be said with certainty that over this last week, specifically from Monday’s press conference through this morning, Trump has been more “open” about his plans, his racism, his perspective, all of it, to a far greater degree than he has previously. It may be that he simply doesn’t have the stamina or wherewithal to withhold it anymore. We don’t know.
We do know that Trump openly stated this morning that he will not allow new financial aid to get to the US Postal Service and that he’s blocking such funds specifically in an attempt to shut down mail-in voting. He openly admitted it. In the first hours following the admission, the net is reacting in horror while also assessing whether the outright admission allows some kind of legal action to be taken to go around Trump or prevent him from carrying out his now stated goal.
To review what was said, Trump was talking about the stimulus deal with Congress:
“Now they need that money in order to make the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots … But if they don’t get those two items that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting.”
So Trump effectively said that if he can “block” that money, “you can’t have universal mail-in voting.” He intends to block the money to stop your vote.
One of my reporting projects has been to get to the bottom of the strategy with the Post Office. The president just says it out loud, though. https://t.co/YgCa05884A

@realDonaldTrump is now on record as saying he wants to defund the post office so they can't deliver mail in ballots. If we let this stand, we are no longer a viable democracy.

This should be another impeachable offense for @realDonaldTrump. @SenToddYoung @SenatorBraun @RepWalorski. Time to reel this guy in. Save our #PostOffice https://t.co/pguc21YYX7

Undermining the USPS is voter suppression—and it's intentional. https://t.co/QE7XDjJqqk

Trump VOTER suppression in broad daylight is criminal conduct. USPS provided for in the Constitution. Mail in ballots during a pandemic the only logical tool of public health. Have voted absentee during decades of Armed Forces service. Supreme Court case? https://t.co/rMFh46lJrd

Used to be there was a Take Care clause that would get someone impeached over confessing that he's holding seniors' prescriptions and retirees' payments hostage to steal an election. https://t.co/Xm6fpxy3Ta

Trump admitting to sabotaging the mail is every bit as dangerous, and probably more so, than his suggestion that the election be delayed.

It is a constitutional crisis happening in real-time as people slowly absorb the news and assess what it means. Trump is willing to destroy this country if it appears that the nation wants to toss Trump out of office. Now it is a question of will, and whether Trump will back down first, or whether organized action is required.
