George Conway Dares the Washington Press Corps to Ask Trump the Most Uncomfortable and Most Important Question

George Conway is one of the most powerful attorneys in Washington DC. He has a brilliant legal mind and a quick wit. He is also a fantastic writer. But even with all that, Conway’s real talent manifests itself when he combines his power of observation and his knowledge of people. His Washington Post articles and articles in the Atlantic on Trump’s fitness for office, his work with the Lincoln Project (prior to taking a leave for family issues), none of it is based on profound legal analyses, nor is it even inherently political. His writing and commentary is more a product of his perceptiveness, coupled with a palpable sensitivity and sadness. He raises the level of discussion. Whereas some allow their anger to be wasted on trivialities, Conway’s questions can be so fundamental they might otherwise slip by as “assumed.”

Conway is at his best today in a new challenge to reporters on the White House beat. He wants them to ask a question. Conway wants Trump to have to address his relationship with Vladimir Putin, the man whom our intelligence services assure us is working hard to get Trump reelected. Certainly, people have attempted to get Trump to talk Putin before, they just haven’t done it correctly.

For example, last night, as Trump left the White House to attend his rally in Ohio, a reporter asked Trump:

“Who do you think poisoned Alexei Navalny in Russia?”

And Trump gave a non-answer:

“Uh,” Trump replied. “We’ll talk about that at another time.”

Lawyers are used to adverse witnesses weaseling out of questions. That’s why courts allow “yes or no” questions on cross-examination. On cross-exam, a lawyer is allowed to “lead” the witness to put that witness in a box, forced to answer the relevant question. Conway doesn’t envision asking Trump a leading “yes or no” question, but he certainly wants to put Trump in a box and force him to face his greatest weakness.

Perfection.

Americans want the question answered without Trump talking about the great military that Trump built up. We want to hear something about Putin personally, Putin the murderer, the thief, the sadist, and the dictator. Surely, Trump can do it. He can find fault in anyone on the earth. So put the challenge to him

We have no inside knowledge nor facts. But if someone forced us to guess why it is that Trump cannot escape Putin’s control it would be that Putin’s guaranteed Trump’s Deutsche Bank loans in a complicated money-laundering scheme. That Trump has been an integral part of moving criminal money out of Russia past sanctions and around taxes for over a decade.
