Trump Says a Vote for Him is a Vote for the Party of Lincoln — Let’s Take a Look at That

It is absolutely true that the GOP is the party of Lincoln and should be damned proud of it. In fact, they should aspire, every day, to be more like Lincoln in the way Lincoln governed.

Back when Lincoln ran, the Republicans were the party of the elites, so to speak. That’s not an especially attractive feature unless by “elite” someone means a person who believes in science, believes in the separation of powers, believes that government and religion shouldn’t mix, and believes education is a good thing, whether they have it or not. The Republicans back then were as “big government” as they come. They believed that winning the election and the White House meant they could make some changes in states that they believed had problems.

Back then, conservatives were not part of GOP, in fact, they were fully prepared to go to war over the GOP platform and become a completely separate country. The GOP wanted to keep the country together so badly that they were willing to go to war to keep it together, too.

Back then, the GOP was so committed to the rights of black people that they kept troops in the south after the war to ensure that the voting rights of black people were respected and promoted. It took a compromise over a contested presidency that led to the removal of those Republican troops, which allowed the southern conservatives to regain power – it was called reformation and Jim Crowe and it didn’t end until LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act as a Democrat and said, “we just lost the south for two generations.” He underestimated it by three, minimum – and there’s maybe some encouraging signs that the end is in sight, progress has been made in Georgia, North Carolina, maybe even South Carolina and Mississippi, but it’s slow.

But just because the party bears the same name doesn’t mean that a vote for Trump is a vote for the party of Lincoln, not at all.
