This is so fcking weird that we’re not even sure where to place this in our minds. Is this something horrific that should strike terror into our hearts? Is it no big deal maintenance? We don’t know and that is the really odd part because when such a huge change is made, literally unannounced and over just hours starting at 5:30 a.m. and finished by early morning, people want to know why. And yet there is no answer, not yet anyway.

Everyone understands that even though we call this place “the People’s House,” the White House is also actually one of the most sophisticated military compounds on the face of the earth and it is constantly undergoing renovations of some kind of another. We also know that many of those “renovations” are entirely top secret. There is no point in putting all kinds of security functions in a place and then advertising what all you did to secure it. Much of it must be kept secret.

But when changes are made that are this obvious and this sweeping, there is always at least an announcement it is coming and the purpose. It would be normal to hear “tomorrow morning, the north lawn of the White House will be dug up as part of security renovations and replaced upon completion,” or “tomorrow morning, the north lawn of the White House will be dug up as part of a plan to improve the overall beauty of the grounds,” something to that effect.

As of right now (and we’ll update as needed), there is no explanation that we or anyone else can find. And given that it was done at 5:30 a.m., it is as close to “middle of the night” changes as one can get.

Is Trump building that moat? With alligators, snakes, booby traps, and bombs in it? And seriously for a moment, like the unscalable huge wall put in place just before the election, is this actually part of a plan to make it that much harder to drag Trump’s ass out of the White House? Like he intends to put genuine big-time military security forces in front of the White House (he fired Esper yesterday). Okay, now we’re getting way out there … Does Trump understand that Joe Biden can be sworn in as president by Chief Justice Roberts at Starbucks across the street and Biden can set up an office down the road and he will be president, everyone working with or for Trump will be arrested? Biden will sign orders and run the country. Does Trump understand any of that? We should not assume that he does.

UPDATE: Alas, nothing nefarious is going on. “The National Park Service is doing maintenance on the irrigation system and routine turf restoration on the north lawn of the White House,” according to a National Park Service spokesperson.
