Election 2020

Trump’s Buddies are Trying to Buy Him a Cable News Network So He Can Ruin Fox News

Investors with links to President Donald Trump and the Republican National Committee (RNC) are apparently considering purchasing Newsmax, a conservative news site, and turning it into a competitor against Fox News, The Independent reports.

Fox News has inadvertently created a stir in the conservative world because, like most other major media outlets, it called the election for Joe Biden more than a week ago, and it’s a situation where Trump’s evidence-free claims of rampant voter fraud have taken flight.

Newsmax has played a major role in this, being one of several conservative outlets trashing Fox for projecting Biden’s electoral victory and at the same time pushing conspiracy theories and simultaneously broadcasting unsubstantiated claims that the election was somehow stolen from Trump.

For years there have been rumors in Washington that Trump and his allies might try to engineer a media empire when he becomes a private citizen again in the hopes of drawing viewers away from Fox, and one RNC-aligned investment group, Hicks Equity Partners is in “discussions” with Newsmax, according to Business Insider and The Wall Street Journal.

Trump, who’s been in a snit since Fox called the election for Biden attacked the network in a Sunday tweet, urging his followers to give Newsmax and One America News Network (OANN) a look after Fox, owned by Rupert Murdoch, aired a segment critical of the Trump campaign’s legal strategy and near-constant accusations of election fraud.

“This is why @FoxNews daytime and weekend daytime have lost their ratings,” Trump wrote. “They are abysmal having @alfredenewman1 (Mayor Pete of Indiana’s most unsuccessful city, by far!) on more than Republicans. Many great alternatives are forming & exist. Try @OANN & @newsmax, among others!”

Newsmax has curried a following since its founding in 1998, but it’s nowhere near the influence of Breitbart or Fox News. It has managed to hire some of Fox’s rejected talent, like Bill O’Reilly, and former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer hosts a weekly show on the outlet’s cable channel.

But even with Trump’s influence and backing, it will be pretty near impossible for Newsmax to become a force rivaling Fox. During election week Newsmax averaged 223,000 viewers as compared to Fox News, which drew six million prime time viewers, Nielsen data shows.

Considering Trump’s consistent habit of failing at pretty much everything: Trump Steaks, Trump University, Trump Airlines, Trump: The Game, Trump Magazine, various Trump casinos, and a host of other ventures that crashed and burned one can pretty much assume that if he somehow gains control of Newsmax that will signify the end of the outlet.

Because if there’s one thing Trump is good at, it’s failing.
