Election 2020

Art of the Deal Co-Author Says Trump’s Filled With ‘White Hot Rage’: ‘He’s Furious to the Point of Madness’

Hoo boy does Tony Schwartz, co-author of Donald Trump’s book The Art of The Deal have a few things to say about his former writing partner. Appearing on Anderson Cooper 360 Wednesday evening, he noted President Trump is not handling his election loss particularly well, saying he is consumed with a “white-hot rage” that’s fueling his increasingly bizarre behavior, including everything from pushing nutty election fraud conspiracies to issuing dozens of pardons for his buddies, to throwing a giant monkey wrench into COVID relief, Mediaite notes.

During the interview, Schwartz told guest host John Berman that the taint of loser is haunting everything Trump does in the final weeks of his presidency.

“He’s determined that the Trump modus operandi, particularly under these circumstances is ‘Maintain dominance in my way when I possibly can and make other people suffer more than I am possibly suffering,” Schwartz said, in response to news of Trump’s pardons of Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, and Jared Kushner’s father.

“I don’t think Donald Trump has any interest in $2000 for Americans,” Schwartz said, referring to the president’s attempts to undermine the bipartisan COVID-19 relief measure recently passed by Congress. “He’s doing it because he wants to show that he’s powerful that he can still step in and blow it all up.”

That prompted Berman to ask:

“Is there a plan? What is the plan do you think, if such a thing exists?”

Schwartz’s answer was a definitive “nope.”

“No, I don’t think he has — first of all, he does not think clearly or rational or logical way,” Schwartz said. “No, I don’t think he has a plan. I do believe he has a bunch of ideas and they’re swirling in his head. What he’s feeling right now is rage. White-hot rage, because he feels obliterated by this. Everywhere he looks even sometimes among his previous allies, he’s hearing ‘failure, failure, loser, loser.’ I think he’s besides himself. He’s like King Lear, he’s furious to the point of madness.”

At this point, Berman asked:

“Is there any part of him that accepts responsibility for being a loser?”

“No. There is no part of him that accepts that” Schwartz responded. “Anybody’s an enemy who won’t support the fantasy he’s bought into. The reason is because to acknowledge he has lost and a loser and that’s obliterating, that really makes him feel like he does not exist. He’s almost dead when he calls himself a loser.”

Undoubtedly this is a bitter pill for Trump. But he’s brought this on all by himself.
