Watch Maddow Break into Laughter Over Ted Cruz’s Rationale for Objecting to Biden’s HHS Nomination
One just expects shameless hypocrisy from politicians on both sides, though the MAGA Republicans took it next-level under Trump and especially in Trump’s aftermath.
For instance, it is now a matter of course that the Republicans will spend tons of federal money and make massive tax cuts under a Republican president, almost like a kid with an allowance. But the moment that a Democratic President steps into office the GOP becomes insanely outspoken about the deficit and how it threatens the country’s economic stability. They block every spending bill possible because it will raise the deficit.
Spending on programs that work will make a president popular. We expected MAGA hypocrisy to rise to a new level post-Trump. Perhaps we didn’t expect it to be so damned petty and in your face, though we should have.
Obviously, among many other considerations, a new president has to get his or her team in place fast. It is impossible to put new priorities and plans in place without so doing. Normally, the HHS Secretary wouldn’t get as much attention as the Secretary of Defense or Attorney General. However, it appears that Ted Cruz and Richard Burr have chosen to plant their biggest hypocrisy flag on the nomination of California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D-CA) because Becerra is not a doctor, and he used to be Health and Human Services oversight committees.

Trump’s picks for DHHS were not doctors, indeed Alex Azar the HHS Sec. during COVID was a political animal, additionally, Trump’s pick for Intelligence Director was picked because of his experience on committees. Maddow simply couldn’t take it anymore and burst out laughing:
“Sen Cruz voted for him even though you’ll be shocked to learn, Alex Azar is also not a doctor. See, it’s unacceptable to nominate a non-doctor to be health secretary unless that nominee is from a Republican president in which case ….. I have to go.
Were that not enough, Ted Cruz busted out a monster tweet this morning. Remember, Azar was picked because he was so nakedly political and controlled by Donald Trump:
If a Republican tried to nominate a trial lawyer like Xavier Becerra to lead HHS in the midst of a global pandemic, they would be laughed out of the room. https://t.co/6FwXugdi6l

Meanwhile, Sen. Burr is deeply concerned about the fact that Becerra served on health committees in congress and may have conflicts.
Sen. Burr’s objection is that Xavier Becerra served in Congress for a long time on committees that’s had important oversight roles in health care issues, involved in a lot of health care policy that way. But Sen. Burr said that’s not an appropriate experience for someone joining the Cabinet to work on health issues. That’s his stance against Xavier Becerra being health secretary.
But Senator Burr supported former congressman Dan Coats for a much more important position, Director of National Intelligence, based upon the fact that Coats had experience on intelligence committees.
‘ So to be clear, just serving in Congress, being on committees that work something, that’s not enough to make you qualified to serve in the Cabinet only issue unless you’re nominated by a Republican president, and then it’s okay. If you’re nominated by a Democratic president on the same basis, then you are deeply unqualified and you must be withdrawn.”
It was simply too much for Maddow to take and she broke down laughing.
