When Trump Dines at His Hotel His Steak Has to Be Bigger Than Everyone Else’s

During Donald Trump’s four years as president, the Trump International Hotel was apparently the place for the MAGA “It” crowd to hang out, and for those who worked there, it could be a stressful, albeit well-paying situation, Mediaite and The Washingtonian note.

It’s nice to know employees there were paid well considering what they had to put up with sometimes. Especially because Trump is apparently a germophobe and is easily bothered if he thinks his tablemates are receiving preferential treatment at the ritzy restaurant, BLT Prime, which is part of the hotel. MAGA supporters like Matt Gaetz, Rudy Giuliani, and Steven Mnuchin were regulars as were Trump and his daughter Ivanka.

Trump even has his own table (#74) and an extensive SOP document that specifically outlined how he was to be served. Mediaite noted it was similar to a “pop star’s rider.”

But that’s not all. He now receives enormous steaks because he once became upset after receiving a steak that was smaller than his guest. In general, he never sends a plate back but the staff kept the complaint in the backs of their minds so that he doesn’t receive under-sized steaks anymore.

“The chef had always prepared a bone-in rib eye or filet mignon for Trump,” wrote The Washingtonian’s Jessica Sidman. “After Steakgate, he switched to a 40-ounce Tomahawk. Trump would never again gripe that he didn’t have the greatest, hugest, most beautiful steak.”

Aside from that, when it came to his eating habits, it seems Trump was a creature of habit.

“Trump always had the same thing: shrimp cocktail, well-done steak, and fries (plus sometimes apple pie or chocolate cake for dessert). Popovers — make it a double for the President — had to be served within two minutes and the crustaceans ‘immediately.’ The manual instructed the server to open mini bottles of Heinz ketchup in front of Trump, taking care to ensure he could hear the seal make the ‘pop’ sound.”

As I said, Trump’s a germophobe. But this is what I found to be really weird:

Being a fan of Diet Coke, Trump was extremely particular about how it was served, turning the whole thing into a seven-step process. Despite his stubbornness about wearing a mask, even before the pandemic servers were to produce a bottle of hand sanitizer. The Diet Coke was to be offered immediately after. Then it went from there, according to Sidman:

“Directions for pouring the soda were detailed in a process no fewer than seven steps long — and illustrated with four photo exhibits. The beverage had to be opened in front of the germophobe commander-in-chief, ‘never beforehand.’ The server was to hold a long-neck bottle opener by the lower third of the handle in one hand, and the Diet Coke, also by the lower third, in the other. Once poured, the drink had to be placed at the president’s right-hand side. Repeat. Repeat until POTUS departments.”

The restaurant was also apparently a favored dining spot for former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who ate there so often he “had a regular table in the restaurant’s downstairs dining area,” that according to one chef, was “pretty much his office,” Sidman noted. Giuliani was apparently considered a pain in the neck.

So it’s nice to know the staff at the hotel and restaurant were financially compensated for their trouble, The Washingtonian reports, especially as Trump is known to be stingy. Employees were offered good benefits and often rewarded with large tips.

Michel Rivera, a former bartender at the bar inside the hotel lobby, said that with tips, he pulled in more than $100,000 a year and that the benefits were excellent.

“People would literally come up to me and give me $100 bills and be like ‘You must be the best bartender in the world if you work here!'” Rivera told Sidman. “A group of three or four guys would come up, have a round of drinks — I could easily sell them over $1000. You don’t see that at too many bars.”

It’s nice to know that some hard-working people benefitted while their bellowing boss and his flying monkeys trashed the country.
