Defendants Charged in Capitol Siege Won’t Make Deals Because They Believe Trump Will Save Them

They just refuse to believe.

We have all read for years, tales about family members essentially “losing” loved ones, akin to the person dying, because they fell under the sway of a cult, and that nothing can bring them back. Obviously, some can get treatment and pull themselves free, but it’s increasingly obvious to about 55% of Americans that there is a large number of Americans, perhaps as large as 20%, that honestly believe Trump is some kind of superhero mastermind and they won’t give up on him saving the day. Their misplaced faith will hurt some more than others.

There are hundreds of people charged with the attempted coup on January 6th. Many of them did the U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington DC a massive favor by videotaping their own crime, making the investigation and presentation of evidence at trial “no problem.” Generally, that means that there will be a plea agreement made because prosecutors will agree to recommend a lighter sentence. Judges generally don’t like to interfere with sentencing recommendations made in a plea because, even though the judge isn’t bound by the plea, the system wouldn’t work too well if they didn’t almost always follow the sentencing agreement.

It sounds like many (certainly not all) of those arrested for the January 6th coup attempt are refusing to “cop” to the crime (“Change Of Plea”) and make a deal with the prosecutors. Instead, they are choosing to have their cases set for trial, and – we guess, sentencing, with the certainty that Trump is going to swoop in and save them. From Rawstory:

“There’ll be a complication for plea agreement negotiations,” MacFarlane said, citing the lawyer. “He says *some* defendants think Trump is going to swoop in and save them.”

Judges really don’t like people who are obviously guilty, taking their cases to trial almost as some kind of punishment against the system or faith that Trump will override the judge (?) somehow. The sentences will be much worse than those that entered an agreement.

Trump is too busy thinking about golf, running in 2024, his plane, possible criminal charges, golf, dozens of lawsuits, his businesses, and golf, to give these people much thought. And, were that not enough, he never really “liked” these people anyway. We honestly do hope that they get some kind of treatment and see the light. If they don’t, they will end up in prison, for quite a long time, which can also seem like a death to family members.
