Jim Jordan Blames the Rising Costs of Fireworks on … ‘President Biden, Of Course!’

It’s become costlier to purchase fireworks this year, and for reasons known only to himself, Rep, Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) is blaming President Joe Biden for the price hike. As he typically does whenever something rubs him the wrong way, he posted on Twitter to complain about it.

“Want to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks?” he wrote. “That’ll cost you too. Thanks to President Biden of course.”

But he linked to a report by Reuters report that noted quite specifically pointed out the reason for the price hike is simple: China is experiencing shipping delays spurred by the pandemic.

“All companies had to go up this year. We didn’t have a choice,” Sharon Hunnewell-Johnson, president of Galaxy Fireworks in Tampa, Florida, told Reuters, noting there’s an enormous backlog of Chinese-made products. And fireworks, she added, are imported almost entirely from China.

In June, CNN Business reported that coronavirus outbreaks in China were further delaying the exports of goods in general, creating backlogs and shortages.

It’s kind of weird that Jordan is trying to blame Biden for this. If you look at Jordan’s Twitter feed you’ll notice China is continually in his crosshairs, and he has even blamed the country for the COVID-19 outbreak.

Long before the pandemic, Jordan’s Twitter feed was peppered with attacks on China, demanding the U.S. hold the country accountable for its actions. Below you’ll find two examples of Jordan’s commentary.

Last year Jordan described China as “a threat to freedom” and noted that the “Republicans have a plan” to hold the country responsible. Then he shared a GOP China task force report that was written by Rep. Michael McCaul (T-Texas) and House Republicans.

The report alleged the Chinese government of covering up the coronavirus thus fueling the pandemic. The report proposed that the U.S. respond by boosting domestic production of “important technologies” and beefing up “security for investments in U.S. companies or operations” from China.

As to his blaming Biden for the rising prices of fireworks, all I can say is it appears here that Jordan has what I call “convenient amnesia.” Because last year the pandemic was in full swing in the U.S. thanks to Trump, and that also led to higher prices for fireworks.

According to Alan Zoldan, executive vice president of Phantom Fireworks, record fireworks sales last year, “reduced the inventories not just for our company, but for the entire industry to the lowest levels on the consumer side that we’ve ever seen created.”

Somehow Jordan didn’t blame then-president Donald Trump for this. But he fervently supports Trump so this really comes as no surprise.

And in regards to his blaming Biden for pricey fireworks, well, Twitter users had a few thoughts.
