GOP Hypocrisy

GOP Candidate Filmed Threatening Cop During Traffic Stop: ‘Big Mistake, Do You Know Who I Am?’

A GOP candidate for Congress in Sarasota, Florida, is in some well-deserved trouble after he was caught on tape threatening a police officer’s job during a traffic stop, Newsweek reports.

Martin Hyde, a candidate for Florida’s 16th congressional district, was pulled over by police officer Julie Beskin in Sarasota on Valentine’s Day. At the time Beskin reported Hyde was clocked going 57 in a 40 mph zone, and he was also spotted texting while driving, according to SNN. Footage recorded by Beskin’s bodycam shows him threatening her job during the stop.

When the video begins, we see Beskin approaching Hyde’s automobile. She tells him why he’s being recorded and why he’s being pulled over.

We can hear that Beskin is polite but firm.

“Hi, how are you doing sir? I’m officer Beskin with Sarasota Police Department. I’ve got you on audio and video recording,” she tells Hyde. “The reason I pulled you over is I observed you going 57 in a 40 and you were texting on your phone while you were doing that.”

Hyde became verbally combative right away.

“I’ll just call the chief, how’s that?” he said.

So officer Beskin told him to “go right ahead” and do so, and at that point, he demanded to know whether she knew who she was pulling over.

“You know who I am, right?” Hyde asked her.

This, to me, sounds like a case of “I’m the big man, you’re the little woman.” As a former security guard, I dealt with this more than I cared to think about, often from truckers who didn’t want to follow a company’s rules. Some of them did things that were downright dangerous. This of course means I soon became used to yelling at 350 lb. men. Which I did, almost daily. It’s something women have to get used to if they are in any sort of position of power. You learn to have gumption, and if you don’t have it, you get it real quick.

And Beskin had gumption, remaining undaunted by his obnoxious behavior.

At this point, she asked him for his license, registration, and insurance, telling Hyde she has a job to do. Hyde offered a snippy retort, hinting in the video posted to Twitter that she may lose her job.

“Yeah, for now,” he’s heard saying.

Then he asked the officer’s name and she responded “Officer Beskin, it’s going to be on the citation.”

The ridiculous back-and-forth continued and she had to ask him again for his registration.

“Can I see your registration, please? You not going to give me your registration, sir?” she asks.

Hyde asks the officer if she’s going to arrest him and she responds by asking yet again about his registration. The haggling over his registration continues as Beskin asks him for his paperwork. At that point, Hyde tells the officer she’s “making career decisions” and demanded to know why she was doing this.

Beskin returned to her vehicle and wrote Hyde citations for speeding, texting, and driving, and failing to provide his registration.

When she returned to Hyde’s vehicle she tried to give him the citations and he told her he “just spoke to your boss.” Beskin asked Hyde if he’d like his paperwork. That’s when things got even weirder because he asked her immigration status.

“Is it your Russian immigration status that makes you talk to people like this?” Hyde asked.

I have no idea where he got this. I’ve listened to the video twice now and don’t hear an accent. You really have to wonder about some of these GOPers.

Anyway, Beskin, SNN reports, called her supervisor and patiently tried once again, to tell Hyde why he was being presented with three citations. Of course, he decided to be rude again, this time retorting that he’s “not interested in hearing anything you have to say. I’ll wait for the supervisor.”

There was more blather from Hyde, who eventually handed over his registration after telling her he had been cited once before for not having it. Then he reminded her once again that he was Big Man, running for office.

“You’re talking to a congressional candidate,” he said.

The supervisor finally arrives and Hyde is seen on camera talking to the sergeant. At one point he talks to Beskin about her tenure with the department and told her it might not last much longer.

“She thought she was on a big power trip. Guess what? She’s been there seven years; she ain’t gonna make it eight. I’ll make sure of it. She ain’t,” Hyde fumes on the video.

I wonder if he would say that to a white male officer who’s maybe about 6’3 and 220 lbs.? Perhaps that might have crimped his style?

He’s challenging Vern Buchanan, Florida’s current 16th District GOP Congressman and has been endorsed by Roger Stone and Michael Flynn, according to Florida Politics.

On his campaign website, he proclaims that he’s against that all-too-common Republican dog-whistle, cancel culture.

“Our great country was not built on tearing each other down, but by building each other up. America is the best country on the planet for far too many reasons to list, but we are heading down a road of assuring that is not the case. Cancel culture needs to be canceled,” his website stated.

Well for all that nonsense he certainly wasn’t interested in being kind to officer Beskin, who really was only doing her job. So I hope he gets canceled during the midterm elections. It’s what he deserves.

Here’s Hyde being really obnoxious in the video below. I guess we could call him a male Karen.
