Michigan Shooter’s Parents Told to Stop Blowing Kisses in Court and Other Lovey-Dovey Things

James and Jennifer Crumbley, the parents of school shooter Ethan Crumbley, are in trouble with the judge overseeing their trial because they continuously exchange nonverbal communication and even blow kisses to each other while in court. The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office wrote about this misconduct on their court filing this week and directed the couple to terminate such behavior in the courtroom.

According to the prosecutors, the behavior of Ethan’s parents is both a “serious distraction” as well as “traumatic for the families of the victims involved in the shooting.” They also wrote that “Mr. and Mrs. Crumbley’s conduct in the court makes a mockery of the crimes they are accused of committing.”

These actions have been ongoing between the spouses from the beginning, including their very first day in court when James mouthed “I love you” to his wife multiple times. After that, the “defendants continued to mouth additional words between each other while the attorneys were at bench.” The prosecutors also mentioned another instance during a court session held remotely when the pair were left on screen together, and Jennifer waved at her husband and mouthed, “I love you.”

Both Crumbleys are facing jail time in the aftermath of their son shooting up a school and killing four students, as well as causing injury to others. Now his parents are on trial for involuntary manslaughter. The two may not be taking their charges seriously, or perhaps they don’t understand that it’s inappropriate to give each other hand signals or try to communicate, even when the court session takes place over Zoom.

They are currently being held with a $500,000 bond, but the public may know more soon as their subsequent trial is next week. Hopefully, they have learned their lesson by then that, as their prosecutor’s office says, “The courtroom is not a place for blowing kisses and sending secret signals.”
