Did Republican Ben Sasse Just Call Ted Cruz — Who is Sitting Next to Him — a Jackass?

One has to make this point rather carefully, and only in the right company, it involves a little bit of trust. In the Senate, behind the Ted Cruzes, Josh Hawleys, Lindsey Grahams, there are some Republicans that are pretty decent guys away from the cameras (they are almost all guys, that is not our site’s fault). It is easy to name some of these decent people, Portman, Shelby, Crapo, even Marco (weird guy) can be okay, and Ben Sasse, who – at times, seems genuinely humiliated by his own party. Losing Jeff Flake to retirement helped add… Sen. Sinema… and yes – that’s much better (though could be FAR better). Flake voted for tax cuts and Kavanaugh and all that, but he also quit because he couldn’t deal with his party under Trump and wasn’t a bad guy.

Today, Ben Sasse, perhaps at risk to himself, called out the Republicans’ single worst day in the history of Supreme Court nominations. Lindsey Graham (Who, remarkably, back in the McCain days, was one of the most well-liked Republicans in the Senate), Josh Hawley, and Ted Cruz, have focused almost exclusively on a handful of cases involving child pornography sentencing. Ironically, the Supreme Court doesn’t even sentence people, nor are sentences ever appealed. So long as they’re reasonably within the guidelines, a sentence will not be reversed because it’s simply rock-solid caselaw that the appellate court trusts the judge that was there, heard from the people, looked the defendant in the eye.

Thus, to spend an entire Republican day with GOP senators – literally – interrupting the judge, at times getting extremely hostile, insulting, and dismissive, has been almost impossible to watch. Apparently, Republican Ben Sasse found it almost impossible to watch because he sure seemed to take a shot at his own party when his turn came and he especially seemed to direct it at Ted Cruz, who happened to be sitting right beside him
