GOP Hypocrisy

Ted Cruz Says Airline Employees are Constantly Hugging Him and No One is Buying It

We all remember that stupid episode wherein Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas) abandoned his constituents in the middle of a devastating storm by hightailing it to Cancun, only to shamefacedly come home earlier after being called out for his callous behavior. You’d think he’d be a bit hesitant to bring up airline-related stories.

But that would not be Ted Cruz. This is, after all, the same dude who made a disturbing, and quite frankly, dumb joke while hundreds of his constituents died during this massive storm.

Here’s the actual joke right below, courtesy of Twitter.

But this time around, per The Washington Post, and Uproxx, Cruz and fellow GOP Sen. Ron Johnson, Jan. 6 downplayer, met with that group of clueless jackanapes (you know — the Trumper truckers) who otherwise call themselves the “people’s convoy” while trying to remain relevant. The group had hoped to gum up the works in D.C. by attempting to recreate the protests that actually did gum up things in some Canadian cities.

These goofballs are continuing to protest vaccine mandates, even though many of these mandates in formerly pandemic-stricken areas have now been lifted. Their efforts weren’t particularly effective at crippling cities across the U.S., but they say they plan to hang around D.C.’s metro area in the hopes of scoring more meetings with notable politicians. Like their little get-together with Cruz and Johnson on Tuesday.

Neither the convoy leaders nor the two senators said much about the meeting, but it did prompt Cruz to exhibit more of his usual dumbness. He’s been a foe of the vaccine mandates from the get-go, despite the fact that the swelling number of vaccinations has helped beat back the pandemic, and air travel is much safer since airlines require that their employees are vaccinated and that’s made airline travel much safer. So Cruz, being the way he is, decided to crack another cute little joke at the expense of the nation’s airlines.

“I fly back and forth to Houston,” Cruz said. “Almost without exception, every time I’m on an airplane, either the captain or a flight attendant will come up to me, will hug me and say, ‘Thank you for fighting for us,” he almost (but not quite) shouted. “Because I’ll tell you, American Airlines — sadly, Houston’s a hub of them — has fired thousands of pilots and flight attendants.”

He emphasized his remarks by slamming the table.

But a January report from Fortune begs to differ. No, American Airlines didn’t fire “thousands.” Instead, the estimate is much closer to 200 and the airline was the first to impose vaccine mandates. Within a month more than half of the company’s 67,000 employees were fully vaccinated and everyone else was either awaiting their first dose or about to be fired.

As Uproxx notes:

“You can probably do the math as to how many stood their ground, surrendering their job for a safe, effective, and free vaccine.”

But you know what this really means? Ted Cruz really is an idiot.

Twitter wasn’t buying it:
