Marjorie Taylor Greene Releases List of Who She Wants Reinstated on Twitter

Now that Elon Musk has bought Twitter, LGBTQ advocates are worrying that some nutters in the furthest right reaches of the Republican Party are thrilled that this is now a done deal.

Tuesday the Twitter board okayed the sale of the social media giant to Musk for something in the neighborhood of $44 billion, Queerty reports. Musk gratefully applauded the decision and said “free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated.”

Whatever.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, queen of the incorrect tweet, is slavering over this, however. Her own personal account was barred by the platform because she kept spreading COVID-19 misinformation. She unfortunately continues to inflict herself on the Twitter faithful through her official account as a lawmaker.

This is leading her to dream big.

“Bring back President Trump,” she tweeted. “Bring back my personal account. Bring back Dr. Robert Malone. Bring back Alex Jones. Bring back Milo Yiannopoulos. Bring back the canceled nation. Bring back freedom of speech. Bring back America.”

Donald Trump was permanently dropkicked from the platform two days after the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol in 2021 to avoid the “risk of further incitement of violence.” Trump has since launched his own platform, Truth Social, which is basically a Twitter rip-off but it’s stumbling pretty badly, Queerty reports as few people are signing up. And even Trump himself has only been on it once.

And in an interview with Fox News Tuesday, Trump says he’s not planning to return to Twitter if allowed to do so.

“I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” he said. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”

As for the others that Greene mentions, welp, they were also bounced for good reasons. Malone is a virologist who was banned by the platform earlier this year for sharing a video that criticized the Pfizer vaccine. Alex “Sandy Hook is A Hoax” Jones of Infowars infamy, was banned for his abusive behavior in 2018. Purportedly “ex-gay” Yiannopolous was banned in 2016 for numerous violations, including the continual harassment of actress Leslie Jones.

Greene is also doing more wishful thinking.

And of course, Lauren Boebert and Kayleigh McEnany also had stupid things to say as well.

It’s expected that Musk’s takeover of Twitter will be completed by the end of 2022, as long as it’s approved by shareholders and meets regulatory sign-off.

At this point, no one really knows what changes he’ll make, but this has some LGBTQ advocates worried, and understandably so. Musk has previously mocked people using their pronouns in bios. But he’s also made it clear that he has a greater tolerance for right-wing opinions.

Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters, a nonprofit organization noted in a statement:

“The sale of Twitter to Elon Musk would be a victory for disinformation and the people who peddle it … the only thing worse than Twitter re-platforming the likes of Donald Trump — as well as reversing course in dealing with disinformation and extremists — is the perverse pressure it’ll create on other major social media platforms, effectively igniting a race to the bottom.”

And last but not least, actress Jameela Jamil, a queer advocate, presenter, and actress with a sizable following on Twitter has already said her goodbyes to the platform, posting what she says is her final tweet.

Good on her for this gutsy move. Depending on how bad the situation on Twitter really gets, many of us may be joining her.
