On Night of WHCD, Melania Trends on Twitter as People Remember Why Trump and Melania NEVER Went

The White House Correspondents’ Dinner went from being somewhat of a legitimate night where journalists celebrated decent journalism to morphing into an event where they basically celebrated themselves. As it got bigger and bigger, it became even less about the reporters and their reporting, or even politics, and became more about celebrities, the Academy Awards of the East Coast, without any awards. Only in the last couple of years in the Obama presidency did they start to figure out they’d crossed a line and pulled it back a bit.

But through it all, the president of the United States swapped roles for one night. For one night, the president was there to support the reporters. The president’s speech was entirely predictable. Three-quarters of it would be funny – some were very funny, Barack Obama’s last White House Correspondents’ dinner was hilarious. The fact that he mocked Trump while Trump was in the room, perhaps motivating Trump to run someday, well… But Obama was genuinely funny. The last quarter would genuinely address the importance of good reporting and getting to the truth, agreeing on facts, which never seems more important than with each passing day.

Trump never went. And that was good because absolutely no one wanted him there and Trump’s idea of humor is just saying mean things about people and laughing. No, when you are president of the United States, it is an honor to be part of the joke, almost always lightly. But mostly, when you are president, you do self-deprecating humor. The guy who can launch nuclear weapons should tread lightly and make fun of himself (or herself someday).

But the president never goes alone, obviously. The First Lady of the United States is there and we have, perhaps, a First Lady with the best sense of humor, ever. And it is obvious that Jill Biden will be in her element tonight. Perhaps that is why Melania Trump was trending on Twitter (We could find no other reason). Because no one can picture Melania Trump laughing, certainly not a real laugh. She might attempt a smile, not a real laugh. IF Trump ever went, he would likely go alone. There was no way Melania was ever going to attend that event.
