Other than really being kind of a loon (when you consider his see-sawing all over the place on Covid vaccines), Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) is an interesting character. He’s often compared to former President Donald Trump, but in reality, the men are polar opposites. On a financial level, Trump has a net worth of $3 billion, whereas DeSantis, according to Business Insider, has a net worth of $318,986.99. That’s according to a financial disclosure he filed with the State Division of Elections last week. While that’s not exactly paltry, it’s pretty striking when compared to Trump’s haul.

Trump being Trump, he’s pegged himself with a net worth of $10 billion, but with all the hoo-ha over those tax returns he’s refused to publish, it’s anyone’s guess if there’s any veracity to it.

Meanwhile DeSantis, unlike the former president doesn’t trade stocks and has $21,284.92 in student loans. He also doesn’t own property. Trump, however, who recently turned 76, is probably the wealthiest man to live in the White House and presides over an expansive realm of real estate that includes golf courses (of course), condos, and swanky private clubs, all under the octopus-like arms of the privately-owned Trump Organization.

DeSantis is up for reelection in Florida, and as yet hasn’t announced whether he intends to run for president. Apparently, he waves those questions aware, perhaps preferring to screw up Florida first before turning his attention to the rest of the country. The Guardian notes Florida has some real problems that include “an affordable housing crisis” and rent hikes that have been exorbitant. The state also has a healthcare problem of epic proportions but DeSantis is fighting “wokeness” during the 2022 legislative session, having introduced the “Stop Woke Act,” and he’s been doggedly fighting the teaching of Critical Race Theory and introducing draconian abortion measures.

What a guy. He’s messing with things that don’t need to be messed with while ignoring key things that do need it. So I suppose that would be one way in which DeSantis is like Trump — fighting imaginary things like the “fake news media” while deep-sixing real problems like Covid.

But at least he hasn’t recommended that people try bleach, anyway. I guess there’s that.

And I’m going to add one last thing: Florida should be teaching Critical Race Theory. Students deserve to learn and understand the very real history of this country. Not a sanitized, cutesy feel-good version. Not the version that Republicans would like to push down everyone’s throats.
