2024 Election

Political Analyst Thinks Hillary Clinton is the Best Bet for Democrats in 2024 and His Reasoning Makes Sense

Pollster and consultant Doug Schoen, who served as an advisor to President Bill Clinton and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is suggesting Hillary Clinton should run for president again in 2024, Newsweek reports. He says he believes Clinton would be one of the best options for the Democratic Party and said so in an op-ed for The Hill.

In the July 3 op-ed, he dismissed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris because their popularity is declining. He added that he and former New York City Council President Andrew Stein wrote in a January opinion piece for The Wall Street Journal discussing the reasons why Clinton would be a good bet for the Democrats.

“Our reasoning was that President Biden’s low approval rating, doubt about his capacity to run again, Vice President Harris’ unpopularity, and the absence of another strong Democrat to lead the ticket have created a leadership vacuum within the party that only Clinton— as an experienced and politically savvy ‘change candidate’— can fill,” Schoen wrote.

Biden’s popularity has shrunk, with his approval rating staying at about 40 percent. And with the November midterm elections looming closer, that’s not encouraging news. Biden’s GOP opponents will almost certainly latch on to the cost of living crisis and the Ukraine conflict as more conservative elements of the party continue to become more prominent.

And of course, his critics continually cite the president’s low poll numbers in attacks and provide analysis that shows his popularity is lower than that of Trump’s at the same point in his presidency.

Schoen also cites the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade could also work in Clinton’s favor because she has always supported women’s rights.

“Regardless of one’s own political affiliation or opinion of Clinton, the country knows her as an experienced politician and a champion of women’s rights,” he noted.

“From her declaration at the United Nations in 1995 that ‘women’s rights are human rights’ to being the first woman nominated as a major party’s candidate for President in 2016, she offers the exact type of leadership that the Democratic Party desperately needs.”

If Democrats want to win in 2024, Schoen said they will need to pull away from Biden if they want another presidential win in 2024 and “even more importantly — have a fighting chance at building a sufficient enough majority in Congress to advance any element of their agenda going forward, including and especially, codifying abortion rights,” Schoen writes.

“Put another way, the stakes are simply too high for Democrats to remain on this slowly sinking ship.”

Indeed the situation doesn’t look terribly hopeful for Democrats if they stick with Biden as recent polls don’t paint a positive picture.

“Only 36 percent of Democrats believe that Biden gives them the best chance to win the presidency in 2024,” he wrote, quoting a Maris National Poll that was conducted last November.

It’s hard to say if Clinton will run or not; she’s previously dismissed the idea of running for President in 2024. Someone asked her last March if she was willing to face a rematch with former President Donald Trump for the top job and she wasted no time in waving that suggestion off.

“No, no, but I am certainly going to be active in supporting women running for office and other candidates who I think should be reelected or elected both women and men,” she said during an interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on March 8.

Clinton won the popular vote in 2016 by 2.9 million votes but still lost thanks to the Electoral College. If this doesn’t make the case for Electoral College reform, then I don’t know what does. It left us with a man who was deeply unqualified to serve as president and nearly destroyed democracy.

Whatever her faults may be (and she has more than a few) Clinton is shrewd and intelligent. Donald Trump is neither and the U.S. will take years to recover from the damage this man has caused.
