Two MAGA Extremists Facing Life in Prison After Being Convicted of Plotting to Kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer

The attempted takeover of the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021, wasn’t the only frightening plot surrounding the 2020 presidential election. The plot by two far-right men to kidnap Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer (Michigan) was another attempt by domestic terrorists to circumvent democracy. Fortunately, both plans failed and the men involved in that plot have been found guilty, The Daily Beast reports.

While their plot to kidnap Gov. Whitmer was on a smaller scale than the Jan. 6 uprising, it was, in itself pretty frightening.

Adam Fox was convicted of kidnapping conspiracy and conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction. His cohort, Barry Croft Jr. was convicted of the same charges — plus possession of an unregistered destructive device. This is the second time the case was tried. The jury in the first case four months ago was deadlocked regarding charges against the two men, meaning prosecutors had to start from scratch.

Now, Fox and Croft face possible life in prison.

The guilty verdict came after the jury deliberated for eight hours, Thus the beginning of the end regarding this weird case has begun. The end, of course, will come with the sentencing but along the way, this is a case that involved misconduct allegations against some of the FBI agents involved. Heck, the case even involved a “double agent” that the agency repudiated.

Last April, two of Fox and Croft’s co-defendants in the case, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta were acquitted of several charges by a Michigan jury after deliberating for five days. This result was a definite blow to prosecutors who had worked for months to show this was an alleged scheme stemming from anti-government anger at Whitmer’s strict COVID-19 restrictions.

Another pair of alleged conspirators, Ty Garbin and Kaleb Franks pleaded guilty earlier on to federal conspiracy kidnapping and wound up testifying for the government during both trials. Another 10 individuals allegedly involved in the plot still await state charges.

Whitmer is grateful to everyone involved.

“I want to thank the prosecutors and law enforcement officers for their hard work and my family, my friends, and staff for their support,” the governor said in a statement following the verdict. “Today’s verdicts prove that violence and threats have no place in our politics and those who seek to divide this will be held accountable. They will not succeed.”

And let me tell you, this plot was definitely a nasty one.

Prosecutors say the group of militia members and self-described patriots, devoted months to engineering the plan in 2020. They were enraged at Whitmer for locking down Michigan in the hopes of alleviating the pandemic. This group of domestic terrorists allegedly hoped to kidnap Whitmer, and detonate a bridge to prevent police from rescuing her. They even planned to leave her stranded on a boat in the middle of Lake Michigan.

“Don’t forget the most important thing: These defendants were outside a woman’s house in the middle of the night with night-vision goggles, and guns, and a plan to kidnap her. And they made a bomb. That’s real enough isn’t it?” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Nils Kessler in his closing arguments Monday. “They didn’t want to just kidnap her… They wanted to execute her.”

Prosecutors say that Fox is considered one of the ringleaders and they also say he and Croft were potentially affiliated with the “Three Percenter” a far-right anti-government movement. The name refers to the false idea that only a few members of the 13 colonies fought in the American Revolution. As you might expect, quite a few “Three Percenters” have also been charged with conspiracy in connection with the violent Jan. 6 insurrection.

Whitmer is running for a second term this fall against Tudor Dixon, a Republican endorsed by former President Donald Trump. I’m glad she’s still very much alive after what these creeps tried to do and I hope she wins.
