Shockingly Angry Pope Francis Berates Western Anti-Immigrant Attitudes, ‘It’s Disgusting, Sinful, Criminal!’

Pope Francis, the somewhat radically progressive Pope, an environmentalist, a scientist, the “Who am I to say?” guy when talking about gay couples, and a man born in Buenos Aires to migrant parents that had just fled Mussolini’s fascist Italy went – reportedly – “off-script” yesterday and chastised the anti-immigrant stance throughout the West. He never named Italy itself as “the problem,” even with the far-right populist Giorgia Meloni expected to become Italy’s next prime minister.

No. Francis unleashed on the wealthy West, generally. From Reuters:

“The exclusion of migrants is scandalous. Indeed, the exclusion of migrants is criminal. It makes them die in front of us,

He is especially angry about the many deaths experienced by people trying to reach “Mediterranean” countries, but one can see it apply across the board:

“And so today the Mediterranean is the world’s largest cemetery,”

And just to be sure people knew he was clear and clearly angry, he spat out:

“The exclusion of migrants is disgusting. It is sinful. It is criminal not to open doors to those who are needy.

This is the Pope at his best, lashing out against greed, racism, and injustice. Francis isn’t just born of immigrants himself. He’s also a Jesuit with a master’s degree in chemistry. The Jesuits are “infamous” in the Catholic church as relatively radical progressives, less worried about rules and bedrooms and more concerned with poverty, enlightenment, and loving mankind. It is easy to see why Francis would lash out in fury as a warning. He knows what has happened before in Europe when populism spread through the continent. He sees the racism in Hungary, the direction Italy has taken, and that even France is now flirting with the far right. It is probably safe to say that Francis detests everything about the MAGA movement.

After all, the MAGAs came together over the “disgusting, sinful, criminal” intent to build a wall to keep people out to their deaths.
