2024 Election

Rupert Murdoch Called Trump to Tell Him ‘We Cannot Back Another Run For the White House’

Sure, Donald Trump is running for president again, but it looks like there’s one big player he won’t be able to bank on: Rupert Murdoch, who has “made it clear” to him recently that he and his huge media empire will not support his run for re-election, according to a new report.

Sources with connections to Murdoch at News Corporation told David Parsley, the chief correspondent at i, a British tabloid, that Murdoch has discussed this with Trump in the aftermath of the midterm elections. Murdoch reportedly told the former president that the dismal performance of Republicans (particularly those who were backed by Trump) during the recent elections, has effectively ended his political career, Mediaite reports.

“We have been clear with Donald,” one senior News Corp source told Parsley. “There have been conversations between them during which Rupert made it clear to Donald that we cannot back another run for the White House.”

Murdoch, Parsley writes, is so adamant about this that he may well support a Democrat against Trump.

“The source added that the Murdochs would ‘likely remain neutral’ if Joe Biden stands against Mr. Trump in 2024. However, the family is open to backing another Democrat candidate should Mr. Biden step aside and Mr. Trump be on the Republican ticket.”

“The source said: ‘If it turns out to be Donald versus Joe then it may be that we just cover the race without any leanings one way or the other.'”

“However, the source added that if the Democrats could ‘find a credible candidate to take Joe’s place’ then the Murdoch media empire could back the Democrats against Mr. Trump ‘for the sake of stability and a sensible White House.'”

“The source added that while the Murdochs would consider backing a ‘non-Biden’ candidate against Mr. Trump, the chances of doing so were slim: ‘A lot of things would have to fall into place for that to happen. Joe would not be running, and the Democrats would have to have a new strong candidate. And that is not Kamala [Vice-President Harris]. But I don’t believe the Democrats know who could replace Joe yet so he may well go for a second term, especially given his relative success in the midterms.”

Lachlan Murdoch, Rupert Murdoch’s eldest son and the CEO of Fox News’s parent company, Fox Corporation, is leaning in another direction and has allegedly told Florida governor (R) Ron DeSantis that he has the support of the empire.

Murdoch’s discontent with Trump is evinced in some blistering attacks post-elections on the ex-president in The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal, both of which are owned by the Australian-American billionaire.

Fox News, however, is sitting on the fence for the most part, with some of its anchors not necessarily listening to the Murdochs. Some on the network are calling for GOP to move on from Trump, but others have defended him from criticism surrounding the midterms.

Parsley’s sources claim that Murdoch was through with Trump after the January 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, but you wouldn’t know that from Fox News, where some hosts continue to defend him in the aftermath of the attack.

It’s way too early to see how all this will play out, but Trump has lost a major supporter here, and for the rest of us, that’s a bit of good news.
