Legal Experts Say Ginni Thomas’ Testimony to Jan. 6 Panel Calls for Investigation of Clarence Thomas

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas is facing renewed calls for an investigation, especially now that the testimony of his wife, Ginni Thomas to the House Select January 6 Committee has been released to the public, Newsweek reports.

Ginni Thomas, an avid right-winger initially told the committee she “never spoke” with her husband about the challenges to the 2020 presidential election. Some of her comments, however, have cast suspicions on that and some are now calling for an investigation into Clarence Thomas.

When she spoke to the committee, Thomas was asked about a text message she’d sent to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows. In the text message, she told Meadows she had spoken to her “best friend,” identifying that person as her husband.

The Committee asked Thomas what she and her husband had discussed, and she replied: “I wish I could remember but I have no memory of the specifics. My husband often administers spousal support to the wife that’s upset. So I assume that’s what it was. I don’t have a specific memory of it.”

Some critics have taken issue with her comment about “spousal support” and are calling for an investigation into the justice.

“It appears, from Ginni Thomas J6 Comte. transcript, that Justice Thomas provided his wife with some for of counseling that reassured her as she plotted to overturn the 2020 Pres. election,” tweeted legal reporter Lyle Denniston. “That’s enough for full public airing in Senate Judic. Comte., w/subpoenas to both.”

And David Brock, founder of Media Matters for America, shared the tweet and added: “More fodder for Clarence Thomas’s impeachment inquiry.”

Sarah Reese Jones, editor-in-chief of PoliticusUSA, also referred to Thomas’s testimony, writing: “Ginni Thomas was texting with Mark Meadows about overturning the election, while she also just happened to be talking to Supreme Court Justice Clarence who was administering ‘spousal support.'”

In September, Ginni Thomas told the committee: “I am certain I never spoke with him about any of the legal challenges to the 2020 election, as I was not involved in any of those challenges in any way.”

There have already been calls for Justice Thomas to be investigated, and others have in the past called for his impeachment and removal from the Supreme Court.

Danielle Moodie, who co-hosts the Democracy-ish podcast, said Sunday, in an interview with MSNBC, that Clarence Thomas’s actions over the past year should be investigated, especially in regard to the fact that he did not recuse himself from a case involving former President Donald Trump’s tax records.

Thomas, Moodie said, “had an opportunity to recuse himself when deciding the case about offering up Donald Trump’s tax returns, when offering up the phone records, right, that the House panel, January 6 panel asked for, because guess whos phone number might have appeared there? His wife’s, right?”

Moodie argued that “we have this weaponized Supreme Court” and said Justice Thomas “is a star of that weaponized Supreme Court.”

“And so, I mean, for me, he’s the ultimate heel of 2022 and should be investigated,” she added.

Ginni Thomas tried her level best to subvert the 2020 presidential election. It’s time for her and Clarence Thomas to be investigated so that we get to the bottom of this nasty business.

The idea of his possible impeachment grows lovelier every day.
