George Santos Could Still Be Removed From Office and This is How

Rep. George Santos (R-NY) is plagued by enough scandals to almost make former president Donald Trump’s own legal problems seem mild by comparison, but even though he seems to be settling into his new job, there’s still a good chance he could be kicked out of the House. Courtesy, it turns out, of his own House colleagues.

Santos has been surrounded by controversy from the get-go. There’s been a virtual tsunami of revelations surrounding his past and present fictions and lies, The Independent reports. There have been more and more calls, even from his own party, but the embattled Congressman is digging in his heels and refusing to step down.

But this might not matter if enough members of the House turn against him. And House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has said that Santos is indeed, under investigation by the House Ethics Committee.

“Ethics is moving through, and if ethics finds something, we’ll take action. Right now we’re not allowing him to be on committees from the standpoint of the questions that have arisen,” McCarthy said.

This could prove to be a sticky situation. The House Ethics Committee doesn’t really exist to hand out truth and justice. But like all other committees within the House, it’s made up of members from both parties.

And The Independent reports:

“Unlike policy-based committees like those dealing with foreign policy or the armed services, the Ethics committee has the unique ability to police other members of the House of Representatives (to some extent) while also retaining the ability to recommend more serious punishments that can be enacted by the full chamber. It is also evenly split, with five members appointed by each of the two major political parties.”

“But while the panel’s deliberations are typically conducted in secrecy, members talk. Specifically, individuals belonging to specific factions talk, which means that there’s no action the Ethics Committee will take that does not have the de facto blessing of the Republican majority.”

The leader of the Ethics committee, Republican Rep. Michael Guest (Mississippi), is a crony of McCarthy’s. Guest is in charge of setting up the panel’s agenda, and if the committee decides to take action against Santos, it’s a safe bet it will be with GOP support, including McCarthy’s.

The Independent surmises there’s not much reason to expect Santos will completely be expelled from Congress. Instead, it’s more likely the chamber will vote to censure him, “though even that action is questionable given the single-digit Republican majority over which Mr. McCarthy presides.”

But there’s also questions about Santos’s financial background, especially his campaign contributions and there is a chance this may reveal evidence of wrongdoing. Politico Playbook and other publications have already found numerous questionable items on the filings, not the least of which is a large influx of donations that are just under the $200 threshold. Add to that two loans to his campaign reclassified from previously being sourced from his own personal funds.

And, thanks to his rather, um, colorful stories, Santos remains under investigation by state and federal authorities. They are taking a long hard look at the string of lies he has admitted to or been caught telling about his background.

If the House Ethics Committee does decide to recommend expulsion, Santos can only be removed if two-thirds of the House vote to do this. The Independent notes this is entirely possible, but it seems much more likely Santos would take the road traveled by others before him: resignation.

So far Santos has merely responded to the news of the House Ethics investigation by simply saying he was “not concerned.”

Santos seems eerily reminiscent of a certain former president who’s facing his own share of investigations, now doesn’t he?
