Saudi Arabia’s LIV Golf Tour Loses to World’s Funniest Animals in TV Ratings
I know as much about golf as I do about Calculus. Which is to say I don’t know anything. I’ll give it a shot anyway: The Saudi-backed LIV Golf returned for a second season and nobody even noticed, according to The New York Post.
LIV kicked off the 2023 season in Mayakoba, Friday. This was the tour’s first event of the season and the first one under its freshly inked television deal with the CW Network. This was a weird fit for the controversial golf tour, but it’s likely no one imagined the ratings would tank this drastically.
The Post reports that Saturday’s overnight ratings for LIV Golf Mayakoba came in at 0.2. This really was disastrous because it indicates only 0.2 percent of households that were surveyed tuned in.
And for anyone still unsure how badly this bombed, consider this: “World’s Funniest Animals,” which aired later that same day on the CW attracted more viewers, Golf Digest reports.

The Post adds a little extra context here, noting that the Genesis Invitational, which was played the week before, as part of the PGA Tour, drew a 1.8 rating for Saturday’s third round, Sports Media Watch reports. Apparently, there was no competing LIV event at the time, and Tiger Woods was playing in the Genesis Invitational. According to the Post, this is his first non-major PGA event in years.
I can’t help but think that some folks over at the CW Network may regret having signed on to this massive ratings debacle. It’s probably safe to say the Saudis weren’t thrilled either. But watching golf is about as interesting as watching water evaporate. Sorry, golf aficionados, but this is all too true for those of us who aren’t wowed by the game. Animals are almost always more fun.
Much more fun, I’ll add.
