GOP Hypocrisy

Social Media Explodes After GOP Rep. Says Melania Trump Should Be Honored During Women’s History Month

A Republican who shared a tweet about Melania Trump in celebration of Women’s History Month is getting a well-deserved browbeating. Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), praised the former first lady, along with Kellyanne Conway, Betsy DeVos, and Kayleigh McEnany for their efforts to “forge a better future for our nation.”

No wonder he’s getting smacked. Ugh.

The tweet he posted on March 29 included photos of the four women alongside their supposed achievements, according to Newsweek.

Twitter users were not particularly enthused about Donalds’ choices here and some folks couldn’t help but laugh over it, joking that the congressman just did it to grab the women’s attention.

“As part of our Women’s History Month series, today we recognize the careers of four more women in government who have worked to forge a better future for our nation,” he wrote.

The list lauded Trump for modeling for major international agencies, initiating her own skincare and jewelry lines, and launching her “Be Best campaign.

That campaign was launched in 2018 as part of an effort to fight cyberbullying (seems like she could have started with her husband) and drug abuse.

“I feel strongly that as adults, we can and should ‘be best’ at educating our children about the importance of a healthy and balanced life,” she said back then.

But as Newsweek reports, Melania remained a divisive figure. When she left the White House, she had earned the lowest opinion poll ratings of any first lady in U.S. history.

Last year, during a Fox News interview and in conversations with a former friend and aide that were secretly recorded and leaked in 2020, Melania vented frustrations over how she has been perceived by the media and the public. But Melania has always maintained a chilly demeanor with the public and the media and that’s largely why she was perceived the way she was.

In his tweet Donalds described Conway as the “first female campaign manager to win a United States presidential election” and he also had high praise for her work as a political commentator. Perhaps he should have also congratulated her for inventing “alternative facts.”

Just a thought.

He lauded McEnany for her role as Trump’s fourth and final White House press secretary. She’s living proof that lies can actually get you anywhere — including a cushy position at Fox News.

As for DeVos, Donalds praised her for her GOP fundraising and her four years as secretary of education. Even though she hit the news last year for telling one conservative group that the department she headed “should not exist.”

No, this is not satire. And many people asked!

Other Twitter users noted DeVos resigned after the Capitol riot and that Conway has expressed doubts about her former boss’s 2024 run.

But some tweets zeroed in on Donalds. One person suggested the Republican was “tap dancing for more head pats” — referring to his vote for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy during January’s knockdown drag-out election for House Speaker.

Democrat Chris D. Jackson, a former county commissioner in Tennessee wrote that he thought Donalds’s tweet was in jest.

“I actually thought this was satire until I saw who posted it.”

Twitter users had lots of opinions on the tweet.
