‘Double Jeopardy’: Trump Says Jack Smith Can’t Charge Him For Jan. 6th Because He Was Already Impeached For It

Former President Donald Trump is making an especially peculiar claim — that somehow Special Counsel Jack Smith can’t charge him for crimes related to his role in attempting to overturn the 2020 election and the January 6th insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

“How can Deranged Jack Smith bring a case on January 6th., as ridiculous as it is anyway, when I have already won such a case, and been fully acquitted in the U.S. Senate?” he ranted Friday on Truth Social. “In other words, I was Impeached on this, and WON!!! ELECTION INTERFERENCE & PROSECUTORIAL MISCONDUCT, all rolled up as one. We are truly a Nation In Decline!”

I don’t know about you, but I think Trump’s already pathetic brain is in decline.

Earlier this week Trump’s lawyers met with Smith’s legal team to discuss the case. Then Trump posted another b.s.-filled statement on Truth Social denying that a third criminal indictment was on the way. Despite the fact that most legal analysts and observers believe an indictment is, indeed close at hand.

“An indictment would be the third one for the former president, who was indicted last month on 37 criminal counts related to his handling of classified materials. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. In April, Trump pleaded not guilty to a 34-count indictment from the Manhattan DA charging him with falsifying business records in connection with a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels,” ABC News reported, noting the historic nature of the charges against Trump.

Mediaite notes that a conviction during a Senate impeachment usually leads to the removal of a federal officeholder from their office and wouldn’t avert additional criminal charges. Interestingly, only eight people, all federal judges, have wound up impeached by the House and convicted in the U.S. Senate. In regards to Trump, 57 U.S. senators, including 7 Republicans, voted to convict him in the February 2021 trial, just ten votes short of the 67 needed to convict him.

I think Trump is clinging to desperation so he’s making more outlandish claims. It’s really bizarre that he’d claim Smith can’t charge him for the ways in which he tried to overturn the 2020 election and incited his supporters to riot. Maybe the stress is really getting to him because his remarks on Truth Social are nonsensical, to say the least. His wacky pronouncements would be funny if they weren’t so sad.
