2024 Election

It Looks Like Ivanka and Jared May Be Weaseling Their Way Back Into Trump’s Inner Circle (and Possibly the White House)

It’s beginning to look like Ivanka and Jared Kushner are beginning to warm up to dear old Dad, Donald Trump since they were on hand for the private screening of the child-trafficking movie Sound of Freedom at his Bedminster golf club on the evening of July 19. Others on hand included the film’s star, Jim Caviezel, a well-known QAnoniac, and several other MAGA elites, including human trash bin and former Trump strategist Steve Bannon and failed Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake.

But it was the appearance of Ivanka and Jared Kushner that drew everyone’s attention.

Trump, wearing his trademark blue suit and red tie, called Caviezel a “great star” and lauded the movie’s successful $100 million-plus run as “really something.”

Trump’s advisers say that the power couple has been spending more time with the former president, and that, of course, has spurred speculation that the pair may take an active role in her father’s 2024 campaign. They have even taken to living in their cottage at Bedminster, according to Vanity Fair. Ivanka also attended her dad’s birthday dinner, one source noted.

“They’ve been spotted more frequently this summer,” one top campaign strategist told Vanity Fair. “They’ve made it clear they’re supportive. They pop into meetings to say hi.”

But Trump’s advisers said that, for the time being, Kushner and Ivanka are only engaging as family members and aren’t participating in an official advisory capacity.

Trump holds a huge lead over his opponents in the 2024 Republican primary, and some sources speculate that Kushner and Ivanka might get involved again, especially since Jared needs to guard his Saudi assets. “Now that the president is 40 points ahead, of course, Jared is pretending he’s involved. If he’s president again, Jared needs to protect his turf, especially in the Middle East,” one former Trump administration official said.

Kushner declined to talk to Vanity Fair, but one source who is familiar with his thinking said: “Jared thinks the team running the campaign is doing a terrific job and has zero intention to get involved. He is laser-focused on his family and on growing his business.”

When Trump announced his candidacy for president last November, the couple, especially Ivanka, made it clear they were done with politics.

“I love my father very much,” Ivanka said in a statement released on November 15, the day her father made his announcement. “This time around, I am choosing to prioritize my young children and the private life we are creating as a family.”

Kushner has been keeping busy with his private-equity firm. Months after leaving the White House, he received a controversial $2 billion investment from a fund headed by Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. You may remember that the U.S. believes he ordered the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, but then turned right around and granted him immunity so that he couldn’t be sued by Khashoggi’s fiance.

But who are we to quibble about murder when there’s $2 billion involved?

And when the Kushners decided to distance themselves from Trump at the time, it seemed like a good career move. Politically, Trump’s reputation was in the trash bin, and more than a few of the midterm candidates he endorsed — including Lake, Doug Mastriano, and perhaps most notoriously, Herschel Walker — crashed and burned in races that they should have won easily. A Politico-Morning Consult poll conducted at the time found that 65 percent of voters said Trump should “probably or definitely not run again.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis looked pretty strong at the time — he had just steamrolled the opposition in a 19-point reelection victory. The Texas Republican commissioned a poll that found that Republicans in the state preferred DeSantis over Trump by more than 10 points. And Rupert Murdoch and his media empire also threw in for DeSantis, infamously running a New York Post cover headlined “DeFUTURE.”

Florida governor Ron DeSantis looked formidable after his crushing 19-point reelection victory. A poll commissioned by the Texas Republican Party found that Texas Republicans preferred DeSantis over Trump by more than 10 points. Rupert Murdoch’s media empire was all in on DeSantis, famously running a New York Post cover with the headline “DeFUTURE.”

Now everything’s flipped upside down and Trump is commanding a healthy lead in the poll, and it looks like Jared and Ivanka, who tend to disappear when the former president tanks, may be changing their minds.

Nevertheless, the couple has to avoid the legal minefield their father is currently facing, with other indictments possibly coming soon. After all, Jared and Ivanka have their brands to look after and they likely won’t want to be publicly associated with dear old Dad if he gets convicted on federal or state charges.

So if Trump wins in 2024, does this mean we’ll get Jared and Ivanka 2.0? Who knows? This is one sequel I’m not looking forward to.
