The Congressman Who Has the Most Votes to Become Speaker Is … a Democrat
While House Republicans throw their weight behind Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has piled up the most votes to be elected Speaker of the House.
House Republicans were definitely in disarray as they met behind closed doors to pick Scalise as their nominee for speaker but it’s really not clear at this point if he can rack up the votes needed to start banging down that gavel after Kevin McCarthy’s abrupt ousting, CNN Politics reports.
The final conference vote tally ended up at 113 for Scalise and 99 for Rep. Jim Jordan. Scalise is working to shore up the necessary support to win a floor vote, which won’t likely take place Wednesday, a House GOP member told CNN.
Jeffries, however, has blown right past these two and has the votes of every single House Democrat, PoliticusUSA reports, noting earlier Wednesday that at a total of 212 votes, he was a mere five votes short of being elected speaker even though Republicans hold the majority. This, of course, means Republicans will not bring the speaker election to the House floor until they themselves have a candidate who’s racked up 217 votes.

Some Republicans are now afraid that a few of their colleagues may break away and throw their support to Jeffries out of frustration. The odds of this happening are pretty low, but that’s why the House could well be paralyzed without a speaker. This could prove to be a big speed bump for the GOP because there are still hundreds of uncommitted House Republican votes and there are also some Republicans who have said they refuse to vote for anyone other than McCarthy.
Jeffries has the most committed votes to become the next Speaker of the House and this is a risky situation for Republicans, who obviously don’t want to see him take power.
Are we having fun yet?
And I say kudos to Jeffries, I hope he’s the next Speaker.
