Liz Cheney Receives Rousing Standing Ovation in Atlanta Church as She Warns of Dire Threat From Trump

I think it’s safe to say that former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) understands the nastier aspects of former president Donald Trump just about as well as anyone can. As the former vice chair of the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, she learned everything that Trump and his cronies did in their attempts to prevent the certification of Joe Biden as the lawfully elected President in 2020.

She knows Trump is a dangerous man, Mediaite reports.

During an appearance at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on Monday during a commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr. in observance of MLK Day, she made the situation quite clear.

“I have never been more honored by any invitation than I was when Dr. Bernice King called and invited me to be here at Ebenezer Baptist Church—in perhaps the most significant pulpit in this great nation of ours—with all of you this morning to honor the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Cheney said, discussing Dr. King’s legacy before turning to the 2024 GOP primary.

“As we meet this morning, a great lie is doing its work poisoning the bloodstream of our democracy,” she told the congregation. “A former president refuses to acknowledge he lost and has convinced millions that our election and our democracy no longer work.”

She added:

“He threatens the foundation of our nation, and everything Dr. King persevered to save. If given the chance, the former president’s allies in Congress will once again ignore the rulings of our courts, the plain language of our Constitution — as they claim for themselves the right to throw out the votes of millions of Americans and install their former leader as our president. We must not let them prevail.”

That was met with a lengthy standing ovation — including from the church’s senior pastor as well as U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.) — Cheney reminded the congregation that they have a part to play in preventing Trump from regaining power.

“Faith communities have a particular obligation this past year. There are churches across this nation where ministers preach from the pulpits an adoration of this former president,” Cheney said. “There are pastors who seem to have forgotten the First Commandment and are openly embracing an immoral, unstable, and depraved man who threatens violence and death, who attacks the rule of law, who says he can terminate our Constitution.”

I have ancestors who fought for the Constitution, who fought the British stranglehold in the early days of the U.S. and frankly, in a weird sort of way, I’m offended that such a venal man wants to destroy it. My family fought for the real rights that Trump and his foolish supporters are against. These people do not understand anything about the Constitution or what it was truly about. The sadder aspect of my ancestors here is that some owned slaves and the country is still trying to recuperate from this. I’m glad the 13th Amendment to the Constitution abolished slavery. A nasty practice if there ever was one.
