According to the most recent report to the Arkansas State Legislative Council, the State Police spent $723,029 on protection for Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders in the last three months.

Just for contrast, the state’s “executive protection detail” from the State Police spent just under $550,000 during the quarter from July through September, and nearly $900,000 in the quarter after that.

When the Council asked the Public Safety spokesperson Cindy Murphy why there was such a discrepancy between the three quarters, her meager response was that “There may be multiple factors at play.”

One of the factors, she said, was that the Arkansas State Police paid out “comp time” in quarter two — the one where it was almost 900K — bringing the total up higher than it might otherwise have been.

The latest costs reported include airplane costs and fuel and vehicle maintenance costs, where before, the reports didn’t.

When asked about that discrepancy, Murphy said that the co-chairs of the Legislative Joint Auditing Committee, Republicans David Wallace and Jimmy Gazaway, had specifically asked that those costs be included on the report.

Which means they weren’t included before.

Now that 900K looks more like a million — or maybe more.

So what the heck was Sarah doing during the million-dollar quarter? Was she taking joyrides in a plane with her taxpayer-funded $20,000 lectern? Was she trying to win her way back into the Red Hen Restaurant after getting kicked out a few years back?

Was she making secret trips to go back and see her old boss from when she was Press Secretary and lied for a living?

The truth is, we’ll likely never know.

After all, she just signed a law in September that makes it off-limits to release any of her travel or security records.

Do I think that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is the most corrupt governor of all time? Of course not. Ronald Reagan was the governor of California before he was president, and he broke the Republican Rules™ and banned some guns in the state, just because black people were arming themselves at the time.

But Sarah Sanders seems to be trying pretty hard to take the title.
