Election 2020
Watch as the World Celebrates Biden — Fireworks in London, Church Bells in France, Parties in Germany…
Monday night, we published a beautiful, short, tweet put out by George Conway – the very conservative, but never-Trumper husband of Kellyanne – which said nothing but “Pray for your country tonight.”
We agreed. Indeed we said that even those who don’t believe in prayer can meditate in silence and join the hopes of the world as one, where two or more are gathered, the power is more than the sum of its parts. We also made mention of something else. We said that for almost 100 years – at least – America was more than a country, it was an idea and an ideal, one that motivated people across the globe.
Of course, we have been so far from perfect it’s nearly a joke. But we’ve been just good enough to be that country, that essential nation that inspired shipyard workers in Poland in Solidarity, Glasnost demands in Russia (whatever Putin’s ultimate plans), Mandela in South Africa, reforms in China and India, these and many more were rooted to some extent in America as a country and ideal. So while we mentioned that we should say a prayer for our country tonight, we should know that we were being joined by people around the globe that wanted “their” America back, too. Their dream was needed.
Well, it happened, and for any that doubted that it mattered, we give you the world, celebrating. From The Hill:
In countries across the globe, people reported fireworks, cheering and the sound of church bells ringing after President-elect Joe Biden was named the winner of the 2020 presidential election.

Spontaneous celebrations are breaking out in the entire free world.

It is not just an American moment, it is a world moment and the world just got a bit smaller. There are some things in which Americans should put America first (our environmental movement, taking care of our poor), but there are some things in which “America First” should mean leading the world, in the best way possible. The world might sense that this fact, this need, might be making a comeback.
And if there was ever an indication needed as to just how much people around the world hated Donald Trump ….
****
Peace, y’all around the world
