Trump is ‘Feeling Perfect’ After Two-Week Hydroxychloroquine Regimen and ‘Would Take it Again’

During a Thursday presser, White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Donald Trump would have no qualms about taking hydroxychloroquine again if he were exposed to the novel coronavirus. She added he’s feeling “perfect.”

“He is feeling absolutely great after taking this regimen,” she added, according to The Hill.

McEnany said she spoke with Trump right before the briefing and said he told her “he would take it again if he thought he was exposed.”

But hydroxychloroquine hasn’t been shown to be effective in treating patients with COVID-19, the disease that’s associated with coronavirus and the Food and Drug Administration has issued warnings against the use of this drug outside of hospitals or clinical trials because it’s linked to heart rhythm problems. The drug has typically been used in patients with malaria or lupus and other autoimmune diseases.

And a prominent medical journal, The Lancet published a study last week of 96,000 hospitalized coronavirus patients. That study found that the drug provided no benefit in treating the disease and instead left them at a higher risk of developing irregular heart rhythms.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, a leading epidemiologist and member of the Trump administration’s coronavirus task force told CNN on Wednesday that hydroxychloroquine is an ineffective treatment.

“The scientific data is really quite evident now about the lack of efficacy for it,” he said.

Information like this sure hasn’t daunted Trump, however. He said he began taking the drug after hearing positive reports from doctors and other healthcare officials and told reporters last week that the drug gave him “an additional level of safety.”

While talking to reporters McEnany said that while people should consult their doctors before taking the drug, which is only available via prescription, but she cast doubt on whether hydroxychloroquine is unsafe or not.

“There’s a lot of hyperbole about this drug being unsafe,” she said. “Some of the things I’ve seen reported out there — there are consequences of deterring people from being recruited in actual clinical trials. It’s important to note that this drug has been safely used by millions of people for a long time.”

It’s also important to note that McEnany is not a doctor and that anything she or Trump says regarding hydroxychloroquine should be taken with a very large grain of salt.
