Election 2020

Trump is Losing Catholic and Evangelical Support Because He’s Just So Darned Cruel

We continually hear about President Donald Trump’s evangelical supporters, who seemingly support him no matter what he says or does and make non-stop excuses for his terrible behavior, but one prominent evangelical pastor, Doug Pagitt, has fortunately seen through this.

Pagitt notes, in an op-ed for NBC News Think, that Trump’s attacks on servicemembers have been especially mean-spirited, and coupled with the fact that he subsequently denied his attacks, Christians are beginning to see him in a different light.

“What Trump may not fully realize is that his general tendency to be unkind may have already cost him the election,” writes Pagitt, who is also the executive director of Vote Common Good.

He notes that in 2016, many of the faithful were willing to overlook Trump’s bluster and tactless crudity on the campaign trail, choosing him over Hillary Clinton, his Democratic challenger by some 65 percentage points over seven percentage points respectively.

“Since then, however, they have witnessed four years of unrelenting cruelty,” Pagitt writes. “And now some seem to feel that enough is enough.”

So Pagitt’s organization did an extensive survey of religious voters in swing states and found direct evidence that Trump’s unkindness often equals mass defections from the president. It’s a pattern that’s so strong that it may play a major part in whether these states vote blue or red.

Indeed there’s been a notable shift in favor of Biden in some key states among Catholic and evangelical voters, especially in Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. These states have seen an 11-point aggregated shift among religious voters towards Biden and away from Trump.

This is definitely good news, especially since other polls are reflecting this. Including a July 7 poll by the Public Religion Research Institute which pinpointed a seven-point drop in white Christian support for Trump. Even Trump’s formerly beloved Fox News has climbed on this bandwagon, with an August poll, showing support for Biden at 28 percent among white evangelicals. That’s 12 points more than Clinton received in 2016.

Pagitt makes many more crystalline clear points that are too numerous to mention, so I’m going to conclude with this one:

In its poll Vote Common Good looked at all the things that we consider to be virtues — Kindness, generosity, humility, chastity, modesty, diligence, and patience. I’ll admit I had to stifle a laugh here because Trump and exactly NONE of these words belong in the same sentence together. Nevertheless, that poll found on average that 50 percent of those questioned rated Biden as more virtuous than Trump, with only 39 percent saying they found Trump virtuous.

There is one area in that last poll where Trump scored well, and unsurprisingly it’s where the poll asked about the infamous seven sins — lust, sloth, greed, wrath, gluttony, envy, and pride. On average, 51 percent of respondents found Trump was more sinful than Biden, while 37 rated Biden as more sinful than Trump.

But are you even surprised by any of this? Trump has run his presidency on a crusade of cruelty. Kids in cages. Outright hatred of the press. Racism. Misogyny. Obviously, the Christians represented in these polls are the authentic ones. Unlike Paula White, Rick Wiles, and Jim Bakker who know nothing about kindness and common decency.
