Ivana’s Funeral Was Very Trumpy — Featuring Her on a Vanity Fair Cover, With Hillary Clinton’s Name Edited Out

During the funeral for Ivana Trump, the first wife of former President Donald Trump, was held in New York City Wednesday. Much of Trump’s extended family attended the affair at St. Vincent Ferrer Roman Catholic Church on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. But Insider noticed something rather odd, however.

A series of large photos of magazine covers were on display near the altar at the funeral, including her May 1992 Vanity Fair cover, noted the New York Post and People.

Vanity Fair’s original cover features Ivana sitting on a yellow couch, accompanied by the headline “Ivana Be A Star!” Also on the cover: a headline featuring Hillary Clinton, with the headline “Will She Get To The White House With Bill or Without Him?” Bill Clinton was running for president when the issue was published in 1992.

But here’s the weird part — the part highlighted by Insider: The Post and People magazine photos don’t show the Hillary Clinton headline, yet they still showed headlines about Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines, and right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh. This really is kind of peculiar, and Insider tried to contact representatives for Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Vanity Fair but hadn’t heard back as of press time.

There was a time when Donald Trump was a friend of the Clintons. The former first couple even attended his marriage to Melania. All that changed when Hillary Clinton ran against Trump during the 2016 presidential election. And of course, this is the time when Trump began fanning the flames of conspiracy theories about Clinton.

I still have too many memories of Trump during that campaign — his lurching around on the debate stage while Hillary was speaking, his bombastic speeches against immigrants, and his “grab ’em by the p*ssy” tape. I really thought that he’d lose the election after that. I think millions of people were sadly shocked when he won.

But like her ex-husband, Ivana Trump was also a strong presence and after their divorce, she became a successful businesswoman. The couple’s divorce was acrimonious but in the aftermath, Ivana flourished. The BBC notes:

“With a very American talent for self-reinvention, she also launched a designer fashion line and a cosmetics company, Ivana Haute Couture, wrote several books and became an icon in her own right as a glamorous divorcee and eminently quotable interviewee.”

Donald Trump and the couple’s three children, Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric all attended the two-hour mass, which turned into a “big, glamorous celebration of her life,” said her friend and publicist R. Couri Hay. He also said the church was decorated with her favorite roses and a purple cloth adorned her coffin.

Don Jr., Ivanka, and Eric each gave eulogies. Trump didn’t, however, but Insider notes he looked upset in photos that were taken after the funeral.

I’m guessing Trump will be even more upset later since the House Jan. 6 committee will be holding another primetime hearing Thursday and it will likely show video footage that implicates him even further in the violent assault on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.
