Ted Cruz Claims That His Wife Heidi Simply ‘Laughed’ When Trump When Called Her Ugly Back in 2016

During an appearance on The View earlier this week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) said his wife Heidi had a laugh over Donald Trump criticizing her looks in 2016.

The View co-host Ana Navarro asked him about Trump’s infamous remarks, Business Insider reports. Both were on the campaign trail competing for the GOP nomination at the time and Trump showed an unflattering photo of Heidi Cruz next to a photo of his own wife, Melania. “A picture is worth a thousand words,” Trump posted at the time along with the hashtag #LyingTed.

Navarro also referenced Trump’s baseless assertion that the senator’s father, Rafael Cruz, was somehow involved in the JFK assassination.

“I frankly don’t know how you get over your wife being called ugly. I don’t know how you get over those kind of calumnies against your father,” Navarro told Cruz. “But you obviously have gotten over it, today you sing a very different tune. So tell us: Were you lying then or are you lying now.”

Ouch!

Cruz’s response was that he and Trump “beat the living crap out of each other” when they were haggling over the presidential nomination.

“I tell you, Heidi laughed when he said that,” Cruz said. “My father laughed, by the way — my dad didn’t just kill Kennedy, he’s got Jimmy Hoffa buried in the backyard. It was idiotic.”

Of course, one could say Ted Cruz is an idiot but at least he looks back on the situation with a sense of humor. As for Donald Trump, he’s got the brain of a Ken doll but the body of a potato. An orange potato. Who thinks it’s okay to insult women about their appearance when he clearly hasn’t taken a look at himself in the mirror lately.

Cruz said that while Trump won in the end, it forced him to get over how his “feelings were hurt” in order to focus on representing his fellow Texas (by you know, running off to Cancun in the middle of a deadly, freezing storm).

Insider posits that Cruz’s claim that his wife laughing off Trump’s insult is an attempt to show his relationship with the former president is cozier despite their past acrimony.

And whatever you may think of Cruz, he did the right thing when Trump attacked Heidi, firing back at him on Twitter:

“Donald, real men don’t attack women. Your wife is beautiful and Heidi is the love of my life.”

He also called Trump a “sniveling coward.” That alone is worth the price of admission.

Ever the fan of conspiracy theories, Trump repeatedly alleged that Cruz’s father was with Lee Harvey Oswald before he assassinated President John F. Kennedy, which is completely unfounded and ridiculous, but that’s Trump. Even after he received the GOP’s nomination for president he kept this up, and it led Cruz to say he refused to back Trump like a “servile puppy dog,” after repeated insults to his family.

The tempest between the two men seems to have calmed, and in 2018 Trump called Cruz “Beautiful Ted,” a departure from his less complimentary “Lying Ted” nickname for the senator. In May, Cruz was seen having dinner at Mar-a-Lago.

Watching these two is kind of like watching a competition to see who has lost the most brain cells, even though one is a senator who represents millions of Texans while the other is a former president who has millions of followers who think he’s their messiah.

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
