2024 Election

Major Think Tank Says Trump Appears to be at ‘Substantial Risk’ of Prosecution in Georgia

One left-leaning think-tank has some bad news for Donald Trump: He’s at “substantial risk” of criminal prosecution due to his efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia.

That’s according to a report from the Brookings Institution. The report suggests that based on the “publicly available” evidence (per The Hill), Trump and his allies stand the chance of facing a slew of election-related and other criminal charges as a result of an investigation into potential election interference that was launched by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis.

“I don’t see how he does not get criminally charged together with others who were involved in both of these schemes,” Norm Eisen, one of the authors of the report told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

In her attempts in obtaining the necessary information, Willis has subpoenaed a few big names, including Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.). Both have fought the subpoenas. And lost.

The Brookings report indicates that Trump and his allies — including his gastrically-challenged former attorney friend Rudy Giuliani, and a fake set of 16 GOP electors, may face charges that include: solicitation to commit election fraud, intentional interference with the performance of election duties, interference with primaries and elections, and conspiracy to commit election fraud.

Trump and his cronies could face additional charges for making false statements, false swearing, influencing witnesses, forgery, solicitation of other crimes, and racketeering, per the report.

“Brookings touted the House Jan. 6 committee in its report for supplying concrete evidence and public testimony during its summer hearings, which confirmed previously reported details and revealed new information about potential violations of Georgia law,” according to The Hill.

The Brookings report probed several anticipated defenses Trump may try to use but found all of them “meritless.”

“When you have behavior that is as far out as this, there is no protection for it,” Eisen told the Journal-Constitution.

Trump is expected to announce a 2024 bid for the White House tonight (Tuesday), so I hope those investigating him get cracking. I’m glad officials are compiling the information they need but it seems like decisions regarding this are long overdue. And I have to wonder what will happen to the Jan. 6 committee now that Republicans have overtaken the House once again.

Let’s hope these folks get a move on!
